St. Mark Catholic Church tonight broke ground on a 52,000 square foot addition which will house class rooms, a gymnasium, a library and a computer center to support the parish’s ongoing programs and be home to a new parochial elementary and middle school in Fairfax County, Va. Hundreds of St. Mark parishioners, members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Catholic Diocese of Arlington Superintendent of Schools, and neighbors attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The new addition, to be known as the St. Mark Christian Formation Center, is projected to cost $8 million. It is being built because the parish has run out of space in its current facility for all the education and outreach programs it operates and because parish families have no place to send their children if they desire a Catholic parochial education. Other area parochial schools, like their public school cousins, are out of room. The elementary and middle school will have an initial enrollment of 400 students in grades K through eight. ...
