Los Angeles: The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s guest appearances at Disney Concert Hall this past weekend marked two homecomings. For conductor Simon Rattle, it was a return to the city where, barely out of his teens, he led an orchestra of youthful Brits at the Hollywood Bowl, caught the eye of Los Angeles Philharmonic honcho Ernest Fleischmann and landed a guest shot with that orchestra to launch his American career.
