Welcome to OZ Rock 101
Australia. A great big country hanging off the edge of the world made up mostly of desert and very strange people. It’s a land that suffers from the tyranny of distance, estranged from the empire that dumped it’s garbage on it 200 odd years ago, thought of largely as a backward society of outback oddballs with neither the idea or the inclination to be involved in the goings on of the circular blob on which it is plonked. Wrong. Australia is the shizzle my nizzle. It’s jam packed with talent, filled to the brim with culture, it’s a secluded sanctuary of cool shit that no one knows about because WE’RE SO BLOODY FAR AWAY FROM YOU! Remember the War on Iraq? That TV show screened a year or two back? Remember the funny little munchkin bloke with glasses far too big for his Gollum like head standing next to Bush and Blair? That’s our Prime Minister! We’re number three in the coalition of the willing motherfucker! That’s OUR name on the marquee biacth! Don’t bother steppin’ to us or we’ll put a ICBM stuffed didgeridoo up yo ass! Yes Australia is indeed still climbing the teetering slope of global recognition, and now Kingblind is here to give us Aussies a foot up and speed us along our journey to being “nearly as good as the USA”. Each fortnight (That 2 weeks for you yanks) the Kingblind Sydney office will turn the spotlight to an Australian band we think deserve some ears across the oceans. Now we’re going to take it as read that Midnight Oil, Nick Cave, AC/DC and what not are already in your consciousness, so in this space we’ll be focusing on the contemporaries; the locals, the ones that deserve your attention. Some you may already know, some you may not, but one thing is for sure: all, you will love. Well hopefully…
Cut Copy When you first get an earful of Melbourne based electro act Cut Copy, Australia is probably the last thing to pop into The Brain. Besides having an extremely cool name that both conveys their passion and skill set, Cut Copy draw a bee line from the land down under right into the heart of Euro electro. Exuding style, Cut Copy hold 80s synth sensibilities at their core, yet not giving themselves completely to cheap retro gimmickry. They take their cues from all the right places, the drawl of Ian Curtis, the bounce of Phoenix, the wardrobe of John Hughes films. With their debut album “Bright Like Neon Love” produced by Philippe Zdar of Cassius, and two brilliant singles “Future” and “Going Nowhere” under their belt, Cut Copy are making strong inroads into the Australian psyche and it would be a crime to see them stop there.
