OZ Rock 101

In the attempt to both put Australia on the map and make sure only the good stuff gets on the export ship, the Kingblind Sydney office presents OZ ROCK 101!, a fortnightly (That’s 2 weeks for you yanks) heads up on the best Australian bands you may never hear. In this space we’ll be focusing on the contemporaries, the locals, the ones that deserve your attention. Some you may already know, some you may not, but one thing is for sure: all, you will love. Well hopefully…

Eskimo Joe
Australia is a big place and Australians don’t really have the time to trek about the joint too often. Most of the population dip their toes on the eastern shores, and consider Western Australia to be as alien as New Zealand. Just without the funny accents eh bro. But over the last few years the Westsiiiide have been making a fair bit of joyful noise, and Freemantle’s Eskimo Joe are arguably at the fore. Born in 1998 as a bit of a bubblegum pop garage band, the three piece kept their eyes on the prize and in 2001 developed from boys to men almost over night with the head-scratchingly brilliant debut album “Girl”. Produced by Ed Buller, it resounded in fine songwriting, refreshing melody, and rock without the wank. The bite of Built To Spill, the youthful appeal of Weezer, yet all the while remaining uniquely Eskimo Joe. The new album “A Song Is A City” is currently being surrounded in bubble wrap ready to hit Australian record stores, and if the current single “From The Sea” is anything to go by, the Joe are about to raise the bar once more.
