Bob Dylan Live 1964, The Bootleg Series Vol. 6; (Album Review)
Dylan: Concert at Philharmonic Hall Bootleg Vol 6: The accompanying booklet is beautiful. I particularly gravitate towards the shot of Dylan, John Sebastian and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot looking at records in the Village. In his right hand Bob holds a copy of the first Stones album. That’s the theme of the concert here, Dylan unveiling his new “more personal” material alongside the earlier, more political stuff (cue Woody Allen’s “Stardust Memories”: Woody gets out of his limo wearing his Fellini shades (that look like Dylan’s ’74 tour shades) and the “fan” says to him: “I like your earlier, funnier stuff.” Woody Guthrie/Woody Woodpecker/Woody Allen). And this is the earlier funnier stuff. I forgot how funny Dylan was in the earlier days, the talkin’ blues “John Birch Society” is hilarious, his asides to the audience “who cares”, the smile you can hear as he strums and fades. The funniest thing is the universal reverence the audience gives the performance. Hushed breaths, polite applause when they recognize a tune-who killed Davey Moore? Well, who was Davey Moore? I’m certainly sorry that he was killed but this track shows the limitations of topical songwriting unless you have Ph.D in postwar American history which was Bob was branching out, showing his “another side” with more personal tunes not to mention “Tambourine man” and “It’s Alright Ma.” The packaging is beautiful, the sound is crisp, the Bob is hot.
