An average old studio film that could only be enjoyed on a proverbial rainy day with no anticipation. The set design on this film practically ruins any chance it has at succeeding. Namely, the obvious soundstage ocean blocking break wall to save money on actually having to shoot, or fake, an ocean location. In fact, the entire film feels like a television set (Seattle natives, think the J. P. Patches show). The acting is good enough all around, though I found it a bit of a stretch that the early 20’s looking Ida Lupino would fall so quickly for the hard 50(+) looking Jean Gabin. I love Claude Rains, but I couldn’t seem to stop thinking of him as Cpt. Louis Renalt and wonder what he was doing in this film. In fact, I always do that with him, it it just me?
