Variety - Many have tried to make Henry Fielding's frisky 18th-century novel "Tom Jones" come alive onstage, but with little lasting success. In this American preem, Brit composer George Stiles ("Honk," "Just So") tries it with music. Despite some inventive staging and a game cast, the nearly three-hour effort is done in by a speedy but undistinguished book, a pallid score and a leading man who fails to seduce. Future prospects look dim without some serious scissor action and a back-to-the-keyboard makeover.
