Film Reviews: The comic mechanisms are familiar but the premise of "The American" is so resoundingly peculiar it pretty much has to be seen to be believed. Uneven but spirited, and simultaneously silly but profound, contempo fantasy centers on a young Frenchman convinced he should be awarded U.S. citizenship simply because he feels American, not French. Set for release in Gaul July 7, the same day "Fahrenheit 9/11" is slated to bow, pic’s B.O. fortunes could tilt either way. Comedy fests and Euro hardtops should bite.
