Variety - Although set in California with a mostly American cast, former docu-helmer Michael Beltrami's sputtering road-movie "Promised Land" topped off its tank with production coin entirely from Swiss and Italian backers. Why they should have wasted their money remains almost as big a mystery as how this ineptly made tale scored a competition slot at this year's Locarno fest. With few redeeming features, apart from a likable turn by lead Chad Smith, pic will be lucky to find a promised land on discount stores' straight-to-retail shelves.
