Variety - Hands-down winner in any "redundant flashback" contest, "Sugar Orange" will have auds grasping at narrative straws trying to explain pic's obsession with a seemingly minor childhood betrayal. Just as pic's hero can't resume his life because he can't understand why his best friend left him in a field after a bicycle accident when he was 11, pic keeps getting detoured by tyro helmer's need to bludgeon viewer over the head with repetitive replays of said traumatic primal scene. Pic's broody neuroticism may grab an outside slot on the gay angst circuit.
