Variety - In the helming bow of celebrated Haitian-Quebecois writer Dany Laferriere ("How to Sleep With a Negro"), young Haitian Gege (Michel Mpambara), enamored of all things American, disembarks in Montreal to join his uncle Fanfan (Maka Kotto) who, conversely, after 20 years of exile, still pines for all things Haitian. Though wittily scribed and engagingly thesped, cross-cultural immigrant comedy falters visually. Whereas Port-au-Prince effortlessly vibrates with movement and color, Laferriere never works out a viable low-budget palette for Canadian topography: His set-bound Montreal feels shrunken and artificial. Still, spot-on gags and characters' infectious vitality of could spark ancillary interest.
