Background Information
In the Vietnam War the Viet Cong (VC) and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) devised many upon many different Booby traps, not so much to kill there enemies but to slow them down to a snails pace. One of these many booby traps was affectionately named by the American troops as the “Toe Popper”.
This small bamboo or metal tube used a 12.7 mm machine gun bullet with its primer resting on a nail or firing pin at the bottom of the tube. The tip of the bullet just protruded from the earth. A foot would press down sufficiently to set it off. The bullet would explode, shattering the victim’s foot. If he was unfortunate enough to be wearing the reinforced soled jungle boot, then the steel or plastic plate turned into shrapnel. Sometimes these rounds would go straight through the foot and into the crotch or chest of a soldier. What an unfortunate way to lose a body part let alone your life!
Materials Needed
Now since you are STILL reading this egg you for some reason, unbeknown to me you want to make a “Toe Popper”. Firstly you will need the following:
1 Cylindrical Metal Tube15 cm long (6”) and 2.5 cm round (1 1/4”)
1 Threaded end cap
1 2mm drill bit
1 Cordless drill
1 Vice / Clamp
1 Nail approx. 5cm long (2 1/4”)
Epoxy resin
1 Round of ammunition (.50 for instructional purposes only)
1 Victim or a Big stick
Method
1. Get your metal tube and inspect it for cracks and dirt once cleaned thoroughly, pull a clean cloth through the middle and out the other side.
2. Inspect your ammunition for flaws and make sure it is a snug fit in your tube.
3. Thread your end cap onto your metal tube to make sure it fits perfectly.
4. Find roughly the center of the end cap and drill through it with your cordless drill, while it is clamped by the vice.
5. Put nail through the newly made hole (with point facing inwards) and secure with epoxy resin and allow to dry.
6. Pour more epoxy resin down the tube to reinforce the nail and allow to dry.
7. Carefully place ammunition into tube and see how much pokes out the top. (If none remove the ammunition and cut with a hacksaw to desired length, 2 cm of ammunition should poke out of the tube.)
8. Dig a hole as deep as the tube is long on a well used route by your victim, then place trap in the hole and fill around it making sure it is compact. Cover trap with native leaves or grass to camouflage it.
9. Walk away and hide be hind a tee and wait remembering not to step there again until you hear a BANG!! Then closely followed by a SCREAM!! Or Go get a Big stick and hit it to see what happens… Either way it’s all good!
Results
You should find your victim with either half a foot or no foot at all (depending on your cartage size) your victim may also be in massive amounts of pain and losing blood fast. So act worried and call an ambulance or just leave them to bleed…If you do make this to hurt people I strongly recommend that you wear gloves while making and planting the trap. WARNING: RESULTS MAY VARY!

Dec 04, 2005 8:25 am - Haha! I have a bunch of stuff like this lying around the house from the "good old days". Those "VC handbooks" were very popular when I was in grade school.
BUT YEAH this is very dangerous and I do not recommend it except in a survival type situation! (multiple exclamation points!) If you are just farting around to see if it will work, or trying to play a joke on somebody you could end up being charged with murder because a person will bleed to death very quickly if half their foot gets blown off. There are other booby traps that are not as deadly and work just as well.

well mike-z i have referenced the top picture, ally mussen shurman or whatever his names is DID make an egg like this... however it isnt as detailed, one picture and its been forgotten. Now wouldnt you rather see this egg than me attempting to make another 1 of 1,000,000’s of THERMITE EGGS???
