In this egg I will show you how to get a lot of iron oxide (also known as rust) in a small amount of time and few supplies. You can use it later in thermite, amatuer rocket motor fuel, or maybe even fireworks. I’ve read some eggs about it but the process in them takes a lot of time.
I. Materials
- 4 1.5V batteries (I actually used an electric igniter from a rocket kit.)
- 2 paper clips
- Water with salt
- a glass or a container
- a sauce pan or something similar
We will be making black rust.
1. Dissolve as much salt in water as you can, you can heat up the water a little to dissolve it faster. You don’t have to use to much water, maybe 3/4 of a glass.
2. Take 4 1.5V batteries and hook them up together, you just put + to - and you have a stick of batteries. Then, either connect them directly to the paper clips or use some wire, any kind should work, and don’t forget to take off insulation if you have to. I used an electric igniter, and it was much easier. Here is an image below:
3. Put paper clips into the container with salt water, and if you hooked up batteries correctly, you should see bubbles coming up to the surface, and lots of them really quickly. Let it stand for as long as you want. The longer, the more rust you get.
4. You should see black stuff floating on the surface of the water. That’s your rust. also, one of the paper clips will turn black, but you don’t have to change it. After running current for about 15 minutes I got at least 70 grams of rust if not more.
5. Now, take the water with rust and boil it until all the water evaporates, and you’re left with black stuff on botton of your sauce pan or whatever you used. Just scrape it off.

But other than that it was fuckin tight..I convineatly had a rocket thing exactly like yours went to go do it, and now i have some greenish water with black shit on the top sitting in my kitchen.
Well if u can answer my 1st 2 ?’s that would be great..peacce and 5*****
Nov 11, 2006 6:48 am - you are suppose to get greenish water with black stuff on top, just bloil off the water and you got iron oxide left. And table salt DOES NOT make chlorine when in water, I was sitting next to the container when electricity was running for 15 min., and somehow i didnt die...
Nov 11, 2006 6:54 am - wait, the green stuff may be chlorine, but in a compound, that means it combined with something else (water or something in water) and is not dangerous probably hydrogen or maybe oxygen idk, but there is not a lot of it
Nov 11, 2006 8:48 am - I am just learning chemistry so everything I say may not be 100% correct but, the greenish liquid may be HCL(muriatic acid). I’venever used hydrochloric acid before, but it is strong so do NOT put your fingers into it. Sk8tapunk: Drugs and pyro do NOT mix, its like KCLO3 and sulfur or phosphorus(deadly senstitive/explosive) Please shut your drugged up ass the fuck up. At first I thought you were cool, but now your a fucking KEWL(bad).

You might have excaped the first time unharmed, but why take the risk of chlorine forming and combining with water in your lungs or mucous membrane and having a very bad cough? The salt CAN decompose when there is a large enough ammount of electricity running through it.
Nov 11, 2006 10:41 am - Ok Phillydude..I went 2 go research bout passing Electricity Threw Salt Water and this is wat i learned.

Ok When you pass electricity threw NACl it breaks it down into Clorine, the sodium becomes oxidized and is now Sodium Hydroxide, and finally Hydrogen. Now that the hydrogen & Chlorine are free and have - + charges they bond and form Hydrogen Chloride.
And since Its heavyer than air, it falls back down into the water And bonds with the excess Hydrogen atoms from the H20 and form Hydrochloric Acid witch was the Greenish lookin stuff in the water.
Witch made up 90% of ur soultion, and the remaning 10% was The sodium Hydroxide & Iron Oxide witch became of the Iron clips you used.
Nov 11, 2006 5:12 pm - 5*s, do you think if you did this with a peice of aluminum, it would make aluminum oxide? Im guesing that it would be explosive

Aluminum oxide explosive? No, it is used as an abrasive. It is chemically inert IIRC. There is already an oxide layer on aluminum so oxidizing the center of it would be tough, even in powder form it’s tough.
Nov 11, 2006 7:23 pm - Al2O3 isnt explosive, and wouldnt become explosive. It is pour on an oxygen source. hence why it is used as a Moderent, and Smoke surpressor.
Nov 23, 2006 1:56 am - good egg but if you put salt in there too.. you get pure oxygen gas goming off. (100% oxygen damages eye sight), you get chlorine (what hitler used to kill jews) iron oxide.. duh.. and sodium hydroxide sitting in the bottom of the pan. extremely caustic. i dont reccoment adding salt because it is what produces sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas.
conclusion.
dont breathe anywhere near this porject. and dont eat/touch/insert-analy or lick the rust
Nov 23, 2006 8:56 pm - Is this gas harmful? Cause I know if you boil some things it can mess you up.Also could you just poor the water through like a coffee filter instead of drying it?
