Ok this is a relatively easy method to change what your start menu says. Ive only tried this with windows XP, but Resource Hacker works with Win95/Win98/Win200/WinME/WinXP so feel free to try with other versions and comment about how it worked. This, however doent work if you have a skin from WindowBLinds so i wouldnt waste your time, but dont be dumb and rate me down just because you have a skin. I just couldnt figure out how to make it work.
You will need:
a program called Resource Hacker which you can find Here
Your probably like "crap it needs a program lets go back and look at other eggs", but this program is basic, free and downloads very quickly.
Step 1) First you need to go Start>Run and type in C:\\WINDOWS\\. When you are in there, find explorer.exe and make a backup somewhere. (copy and paste).
Step 2)
Now open Resource Hacker. When thats Open, go File>Open and open the original explorer.exe. (C:\\WINDOWS\\explorer.exe)
Step 3) When you have the window opened and it looks like it does in the step 2 pic, then click the plus sign next to ’String Table’ and expand it.
Step 4) Click the plus sign next to the folder labeled ’37’ to expand it and select the cog-wheel looking thing labeled ’1033’. It should show a bunch of text on the right side of the screen. Highlight the word start but NOT THE PARENTHESIS, and replace it with what you want to show up on the start menu button.
I replaced it with G-RAD which is basically my nickname.
Step 5) Up above the section to the right, with the text, click the ’Compile 5cript’ button.
Step 6) Now go File>Save As and save in C:\\WINDOWS as ’NEWTEXT’explorer.exe but replace ’NEWTEXT’ with whatever you put on your button.
Step 7) Now go to Star>Run and type in C:\\WINDOWS\\regedit.exe and press enter. once you are there expand the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then expand the folder Microsoft which is in the other folder. After that, scroll down and expand Windows NT and then CurrentVersion and then FINALLY open WinLogon. When you are in there right click on the entry called ’Shell’ and click modify. In the values box replace whats in there with the name of your modified explorer.exe file. make sure that the .exe part is still there. click ok.
Step 8) YAY your done! jus close everything and then reboot your computer! this is what it should look like:
