In this I will show you visually how to pick locks. This tutorial is very basic, and is not to be used anywhere except for recreational purposes. Here we go:
I am an experienced lock picker. I have been picking for a while and my favorite set is the SouthernOrdinance MPXS-20.
This basic set covers most of the essential tools for all locks. The most needed pieces are the Tension Tools.
Notice the L-shaped part on the end. This tool is the primary tool used to actually open the lock. This will be inserted into the bottom of the lock, but we will discuss that later on.
Now I will show you a picture of tools called Rakes. Notice the shapes on the end of these tools. They are spiked, or curved. Hence the name ’Rake’. These tools are used to rake the pins of the lock, to get more pins up at a time.
Now I will show you the tools called Feeler Picks. These tools are used for more precise picking. They are used to lift just one or two pins in the back of the lock.
Now I will show you my favorite combination of Tension Tool and pick.
Great! Now we can get started on the real picking! This is the lock I will be picking:
For this lock I will be using this combination of Tension Tool and pick.
Now, first things first. Look into the keyhole on the lock. Find the little gold pieces of metal on the top of the lock. These are called the Pins. When all of these are in the correct place, the lock will open.
Now, insert the Tension Tool of choice into the bottom of the lock like so:
Once you have that down, insert the pick (Rake or Feeler, your choice) above the tension tool. Like this:
Now, apply slight pressure on the Tension Tool, trying to turn it the way that the key would turn to unlock it. Most lockpickers like to use a method of holding the Tension tool and the lock in the same hand.
Now, while applying pressure on the Tension Tool, jiggle the actual pick up and in and out of the lock to move the pins into the correct place.
While applying pressure, the lock should open within about 1 min. As you get more and more experienced, your open time should go down. A lock like this I can bypass in about 1.5 seconds. When the lock is open, it should look something like this:
Thank you very much for reading this long entry. Please rate and comment, and I always like having friends.
Jan 26, 2008 10:47 am - I myself lockpick, and have a real set.
This egg was awful. You may be a decent lockpicker, but you can’t teach, atleast on the internet. The MIT guide to lockpicking is free, and much better, it teaches you how to pick a lock, not using a rake. Which is useless on anylock that is better then a masterlock.
2* for effort.
Jan 26, 2008 11:10 am - I completely agree with CoinOperator. You should have showed how to properly pick, not just rake. You can’t rake all locks. 3* just fer kicks
Jan 26, 2008 11:19 am - The point isnt making a new egg, it’s that there wasn’t a point of making this egg, any beginer will have an awful start once he starts off with raking, and doesnt know the basics of how it works. You didn’t even show how a lock works, which is how lockpicking actually works. IMO masterlocks should be warm-ups even for beginers.. Also, you should’ve showed how so make a basic homemade pick. Many people here can’t order on the internet, or their parents wouldn’t trust them with lockpicks.
Jan 26, 2008 12:11 pm - The point is you kids are noobs.
yes maybe raking is a bit low level. but the quality of the egg is good, he spent time on it and tried to explain it well.
its noobs like you making RE become shit.
so 5* for this guys egg and pro. and 0*s for you noob flamers
Jan 26, 2008 1:00 pm - Bsmovies,
I hope you don’t consider me flaming, I rated a 2* for effort, it wasn’t a good egg, and that wasn’t flaming, don’t misinterpret me, I couldn’t give a fuck about what you vote me, the fact is, your 5* doesn’t affect him at all, he reached his point limit after 2 votes.
Jan 26, 2008 1:16 pm - Coinoperator, study the mechanics of this site, then rethink what you said.
he dosent gain anymore points, but his egg gets increased rating, his profile gets increased rating (cos i voted it), thus moving him up in site stats as im a high level member.
and my vote you should care about, my account is the 24th (and increasing), most powerful account on the site, so my ratings have alot of effect.
Jan 26, 2008 1:20 pm - Bsmovies, I agree, your ratings do have alot of effect, I wont kiss your ass, but i know what you mean. I also lockpick, its a hobby of mine, so you can see where im coming from.
Magnus, this doesn’t involve you, but you’ve already pulled the trigger before asking questions, welcome to my fagbook.

Jan 26, 2008 7:27 pm - I wasn’t flaming, bsmovies....I didn’t say his egg was bad in anyway. I suggested what he should have done to make a better one. What I said was a fact, that you cannot rake all locks. And it’s pretty gay of you to 0* my profile for it.
Jan 26, 2008 9:46 pm - ok. i understand that you cant rake all locks. but you can rake the easy, beginner locks (masterlocks). that is why i put "THIS TUTORIAL IS VERY BASIC" at the beginning of the egg.
