Materials:
Potassium nitrate
Zinc powder
Sulfur
Charcoal
Dextrin
Screen sieve
Mixing containers
Knife
Scale
75:25 water:alcohol mix
sheet of paper
sheet of wax paper
SPOON! ("the tick" reference)
Step one:
Gather all your materials.
Mix :
40 grams zinc
35 grams potassium nitrate
15.5 grams charcoal (the extra .5 is to be explained)
5 grams sulfur (i added .4 grams extra because I have dusting sulfur which is cut with anti caking material)
5 grams dextrin
Step Two:
Screen together the mix several times using your sieve, as you can see it is very clumpy...we can’t have that.
It should look like this when it’s done. note the extra charcoal is no longer there... thats because while sifting it becomes airborne, if the extra charcoal was not added it would have ruined the effect AND burn rate AND color AND burn temperature AND burn products...etc...etc
Step Three:
lay out a sheet of wax paper and begin spraying the solvent into your mix until it is the consistency of playdough, as you can see I have made an imprint of my thumb...if it is wet enough to do that yet dry enough to crumble at the edges it’s just right.
take your knife and mold it into a square, cut it in squares, then trim the edges to make it perfect, you can see I have made a comet for an aerial shell with the trimmings.
now let it dry for several days in a cool dark place. the reason we do this is to prevent cracks and incomplete drying... if you dry it to fast a crust forms that prevents further drying.
