Day by Day Itinerary
SAT. DAY 1: Arrive Juan Santamaria International Airport where you will be met at the ramp by a representative who will help you through immigration and customs and transfer you to the hotel. Overnight at Gran Hotel Parque del Lago. (SG)
SUN. DAY 2: After breakfast , you will be met at the hotel by your naturalist guide for the approximate 4 1/2 hours drive to the Arenal area. The scenery is enhanced by grassy hills, cultivated fields and small islets. To the east, like a sentinel, towers the massive Arenal Volcano which has been active since 1968. Arrive at the Hotel in time for an afternoon rest. In the evening you will drive approximately 30 minutes to view the volcanic activity which may include explosions and lava flows. Overnight at Hotel Arenal Observatory. (BLD) (NG).
MON. DAY 3: Full day to explore the Atlantic slope or the Tilaran mountains, including a visit to Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge (hot climate). The forests, grasslands and marshes provide shelter for cougars, tapirs, jaguars and ocelots, roseate spoonbills, white ibis, American anhingas, Neo-tropic cormorants and much more. TUES. DAY 4: After an early morning breakfast , drive 1 hour to Rio Frio, Sarapiqui (hot climate) where you will meet the light charter* plane for the approximate 15 min. flight to Tortuguero (hot climate). Tortuguero National Park preserves 21,000 hectares of tropical rainforest in its natural state. Overnight at Tortuga Lodge. (BLD) (NG)
WED. DAY 5: The next two days will be spent at Tortuguero. Tortuga Lodge will schedule boat tours (totaling approximately 6 hours and included in the price) into the jungle for wildlife observation with a local naturalist guide. Additional boat tours are available at an extra cost. There will also be time to wander on the primitive deserted (swimming not allowed) beach across from the lodge where from June through October thousands of green sea turtles come to nest. There are special night tours available in season to observe this awe-inspiring ritual. Overnight at Tortuga Lodge. (BLD) (NG)

FRI. DAY 7 : After an early morning breakfast, board the boat with a local novice naturalist guide and depart for the approximate 2-4 hour trip down the canals to the Freeman*** dock in the Limon area. A van with driver will meet you for the drive through Braulio Carrillo National Park, stopping on route at the Rainforest Aerial Tram. This is a unique ecoturism and research facility. The tram will take visitors on an excursion through the rainforest canopy and its hanging gardens of plants and animals hidden at the tops of tall tropical trees. Home of two-thirds of all rainforest species, the rainforest canopy is a little-known world of tremendous beauty and extraordinary biological diversity. The site, next to the northern border of Braulio Carrillo National Park, possesses one of the richest canopy communities in the world. Transfer back to San José. At evening a farewell dinner will be held. (BLD) (NG)
