The Johnstone Strait area of Vancouver Island’s Inside Passage is considered the best place in North America to see the killer whale, also known as ‘Orca’ or ‘Blackfish’. Johnstone Strait is the summer home of B.C.’s northern resident Orca Whales who come to feed, socialize and rub their bodies on the pebble beaches of Robson Bight. The thrill of watching Orca whales break the surface of the water can only truly be experienced from the eye level view that the kayak provides. Although the killer whale is the main attraction, plenty of other exhalerating wildlife encounters.

Rivaling the excitement of paddling with the Orcas, is the fascinating cultural history of the enchanting Indian Island Group. Dotted amongst the intricate network of the lush forested islands we find ancient abandoned native sights of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations people. There are still remnants of their existence found in weathering totem poles, long house structures, and pictographs. Paddling in the silent path of these people, it is hard not to feel the presence of their ancestral spirits.
