Deparchmention: This Mountain bike trail on the Eastern Shore is the closest thing we have to a downhill run. Most of the trail runs along Interstate 10 along the gasline maintenance road. Though I-10 seems flat, the highway actually cuts through some of the larger hills in Baldwin County. The maintenance road running parallel to I-10 is perfectly straight. There are some large, very jumpable water breaks along the trail. Be careful though, some of the waterbreaks have been damaged!!! Look before you leap or you may find yourself landing in a huge hole! The gasline road is about 5 miles long with 3 to 4 creek crossings depending on the recent rainfall. The loop described below is about 11 miles long. Some of the uphills are too steep to ride up, so expect to walk a little. Additionally, there are some sandy sections. The water breaks are really fun so expect to catch a little air. I wish I had a map, but right now there is not one. If you have Microsoft streets 98, email me and I will send you a basic map.
Directions: The Gasline is located about 2 miles from the Daphne Exit on I-10. Exit off of I-10 and head east on US 90. The best place to start the Gasline Loop is from the Church parking lot across the street from the Gayfers on US. 90. If you are having trouble finding it, go to Eastern Shore Schwinn on US. 90. From the Church parking lot, head up the hill until you see a dirt road. It will go behind the new hospital complex. Once you are on the trail enjoy the ride. The first section on the Gasline is about 2 miles long. Bear right at the only fork in the trail. You may see some trails diverting off the trail, and some are worth exploring. (If you end up in Malbis take Highway 27 back to 90 and head back East until you reach Highway 13.)The main trail will eventually put you back on US. 90 near highway 13?. Take a left, or go east on US 90 until you are close to Highway 13. Begin Looking to the left, and you will see a small, partially hidden road. Take it. This is the second section of the Gasline. It is in much better condition than the first. Continue down the road until you reach a T in the trail. Go right until you reach the field in Malbis. Once you reach the field TURN AROUND and head back to the T in the trail. Take a left and head back out to Highway 90. From here head towards Highway 13 and turn onto it. Continued down Highway 13 until you reach Lawson Road. You will see DHS at the top of the hill. Take a right onto Lawson Rd. Then take a right onto Ridgewood Dr and look for a gravel trail entrance immediatly on the left beneath some large powerlines. Proceed down this, looking for a trail on your left. (if you go down a large hill you went too far.) Take the trail to your left and you will come out in a subdivision on Meadow Wood Drive. Continue up the hill and take the first or second paved road on the right. I think it is Lawson Road South? You should see the trail at the end of the street. If you don’t see a trail, try the other street. Continue down the trail. You are about to enter the Lake forest Horse trail system. There are about a million ways to ride through it! If you continue to take mostly right hand turns you should make it out onto Rolling Hill Dr. Take a left onto Rolling Hill Drive and go until you reach Bay View Dr. Take a left and cross the creek on the Bridge and take and immediate right down the driveway. You will see the trail at the end of it. Continue along this trail until you reach a road. I think it is Forestwood Drive or Riveroaks Circle.Take a right onto this road and then a left onto Country Club Dr. Stay on Country Club Dr. for a while, then take a right onto Lake Forest Dr and an eventual left onto D’Olive Blvd. Then take a right onto Main street. Stay on Main until you reach the intersection with US 90. Take a right on US 90 and look for the church on the left. This loop as described will be about 10-12 miles long. The trail can be ridden many different ways, explore a little and have fun. Allow extra time just in case you get lost!
