From Interstate 5 take El Toro Rd. North up into the hills past Cook’s Corner. Turn right on Live Oak Canyon. After passing O’Neill park turn left on Trabuco Road. Park at the turn off for Holy Jim rd. past the fire station.
Ride on the road next to the houses up to the gate that marks the start of Holy Jim trail. Riding in the lower section you will travel up stream to the first trail intersection. Turning left you will remain on Holy Jim trail and continue up the mountain. Soon you will be climbing up very rough terrain, this climb will continue past several switch backs and climb and climb.
Close to the summit is a section you will have to push your bike. From Bear Springs you will connect with the Main Divide Truck trail. An old water tank marks this area. From Bear Springs you can continue up to the 5,687’ summit of Santiago Peak. The last 3 miles and several hundred feet of elevation gain make the summit a tough ending to an already exhausting climb.
To go back, retrace your path back down the mountain. The return trip only takes a few minutes to complete. When you reach the last trail junction you can hike it a couple hundred yards to Holy Jim Waterfall. It’s well worth the trip, however, it is a hike and you won’t be able to ride due to rock boulders. |
