Halloween safety tips from the California Poison Control System The mischief night prank is one of many that takes place each year in State College, said Lt. Diane Conrad of the State College Police Department.
Annual pranks range from pumpkin and corn throwing to doorbell ringing, she said. Damage is usually minimal, but can be dangerous, Conrad said.
"(Once) the kids threw a pumpkin onto a roadway . . . and somebody got glass in their eye," Conrad said.
When the pumpkin hit a windshield, it broke, shattering the windshield and causing glass to fly everywhere.
Pranks such as that not only cause accidents, but also can damage the car such as when a car is bombarded by eggs, Conrad added. The eggs, if not cleaned off immediately, can "eat the finish off of a car," she said.
The Ferguson Township Police Department is already experiencing thefts related to Halloween, Ferguson police said in a news release yesterday.
Halloween decorations, including pumpkins, lights and skeleton props, have been stolen from residences during the late night, Ferguson police said.
In addition, a $200 replica of a Nittany lion, weighing 200 pounds, was stolen from a property in the area, Ferguson police said.
Most vandalism is caused by teen-agers, Conrad said. But when the bars let out, there is toilet paper strung around town, obviously caused by young adults, she said.
Not all pranks are serious crimes, however.
Hafetz (senior-marketing) said the prank on his friends did not bother them and they thought it was funny.
Dwight Smith, supervisor of University Police Services, said Halloween is not always about mischief.
"There’s a lot of people dressing up and having a good time," he said.
However, obstacles, such as pumpkins placed in the road and airborne objects can cause accidents, Smith said.
Dave Kuhn (senior-science) never got involved in these pranks because they are not constructive, he said. Although he has never been the target of a prank, Halloween pranksters would bother him in certain cases.
"It bothers me a lot if it’s done to my property," he said.
How many pranks there are per year depend on the weather and timing of the holiday, Smith said.
"Most of the problems are on Halloween night, but it depends on the night of the week," he added.
More problems occur if Halloween and mischief night are on Thursday and weekend nights, he said. |

Causing Mischeif is all fine and dandy, but don’t do it on innocent people. Enemies... Yes, fuck up their car, house, lawn, etc. But leave people who did nothing to you alone. Well, unless you just scare the shit out of them. That’s always good. |
