Ok see the pic above? A simple flare. I made it by making a small hole in a tennis ball.
I then got a funnel and poured thermite in it. (If you dont know what that is then go away). I also added a pottasium nitrate/sugar smoke bomb.. DO NOT MELT IT!!! Stuck some magnesium ribbon in it.. And viola. You have yourself a flare that will last about 2-3 minutes.. And it looks like the picture the whole time.

Have fun. Becareful. I am not responsible for anything that happens when making or using this flare.
P.s. i think the reason it lasts so long is because of the potassium nitrate.. Its a rocket fuel oxidizer.

you can also get it buy buying stump remover at your local hardware/lawn and garden store (depending on where you live)

another note, i think it might work better if you melt the potassium nitrate/sugar, let it dry and then either use chunks or smash it up again...
