I live in Latvia, and this is my story of what happened ’bout a year ago, when I was 13.
Me and my friends were bored at home and had gotten bored with blowing up bottles with fireworks, so we decided to do a bit of exploring. Not far from my house there was an entrance to a tunnel going under the ground. I had ventured near there once or twice, but had alway chickened out. Anyhoo, we went the kilometer to the entrance, flashlights and Snickers in hand
(We didn’t know exactly how long it was, but we knew it was long) and one by one slipped into the tunnel. It wasn’t as bad as I had expected it to be; it was dry and not too cold. The tunnel itself was pretty wide, wide enough for about 5 people to go standing side-by-side.
So there we were, walking for a long time, when suddenly one of my friends nudged me and pointed with his flashlight deeper into the tunnel. At first I didn’t see anything, but then my eyes landed on a giant mass of barbed wire and other garbage.
Can you say "illegal dump"? :D
Anyway, 2 of my friends suggested we turn back, but the rest of us thought we could get through.
BAD IDEA. We did get through - after about 15 minutes, and the fruit of our labor was not only getting to the other side, but ripped clothes and bloody scratches. So we walked on, and ocassionally found graffiti scribbled on the walls and empty chip packs thrown around on the floor. Someone had been here before us.
Near the end of our trek we saw something cool - it looked like a helmet, so we went and checked it out: It was. And it looked old too. We decided not to venture further and turned back.
It was only after I took the helmet to a historian that I learned that it was a WWII relic and worth about 1000 USD to a collector.
It still stands in my room to this day. It was an old German Legion helmet; they were using the tunnel as an escape route when they were retreating from the Red Army in ’44.
Well, this was my first egg, sorry if something is wrong with it.
