We’ve all heard the hitchhiking horror stories, but most of them aren’t true or are exaggerated. 99% of hitchhikers are just people that need to get somewhere and same with the people that pick them up.
I wouldn’t advise women hitchhike alone, but for the most part, hitchhiking is perfectly safe.
Now a lot of times we use signs with our destination on them, but this isn’t always the best. Sometimes the simple thumb works more effective. There are lots of people that haven’t picked up any/many hitchhikers and aren’t completely comfortable with it, but think about it. If you are going long distance, but have a specific destination on your sign, many of these people will not be going there and think that they wouldn’t be able to help anyway. Having your thumb up for long periods of time gets tiring a lot faster than you’d think though.
Try to always face traffic that’s going where you want to go. People feel more comfortable pulling over if they can see what you look like.
The less people you are with, the better. Most cars only fit 4 or 5 people and most of the time those seats are partly filled. Travelling with more than 3 people by thumb can be very hard (try train-hopping).
Finding a good spot to thumb is hard too sometimes. In many states it is illegal to be on the shoulder of a freeway, so you have to find an on-ramp. Try to find one at a frequent stopping place, the more traffic the better. Also look for the poorer, shittier cars. Most wealthy have never had a problem with transportation and haven’t even considered hitchhiking or picking someone up, there are always exceptions of course. VW vans are WINNERS. The first ride I ever got was from one actually.
Try to look harmless and friendly. No one wants to pick up someone with a "I’M GOING TO MURDER YOUR FAMILY" face on. It also never hurts to appear clean. Always introduce yourself and be curteous.
The best way to quickly get rides is to try it out and learn yourself. You might be suprized how quick someone stops and offers a ride, sometimes people are nicer than you think. Hitchhiking is one of the freest experiences I’ve ever had, I recommend it to everyone. You can travel wherever you want that is connected to where you are at by land and road, for free, and you get to meet some friendly, crazy and funny people along the way! Hope I didn’t forget much. Jul 03, 2005 9:16 pm - There are quite a few things in this that I have to remind friends that I’m hitchhiking with of often. If you aren’t interested in hitchhiking then don’t read it because it won’t affect you.
