Just for example, with regard to "silhouette"-- I was in an urban area at about 3:00 a.m. not too long ago. It was a desolate "warehouse district" type of place. I was passing through after attending a party-- someone offered to give me a ride home but I declined. It was very dark (new moon). I was crossing an area where there are some tracks when I sort of stumbled across these bums who had a big fire blazing in a trashcan. It was out in an open area. There were about ten guys there. I didn’t want to walk right through them and I didn’t want to turn around and sneak back the way I came. Therefore I used the flickering shadows cast by the fire to sort of hide myself-- I passed as far away as I could manage from the group (there were buildings and fences everywhere) and kept myself between the open tracks and them, in case I had to run. With almost no cover to hide me, I would take three or four steps and then turn my body at an angle to their line of sight, stand there for a few seconds, and then take a few more steps. I kept my face turned away and hands in my hoodie so they wouldn’t reflect the light. The closest I had to get was about 30 yards or so, and they could easily have seen me but because of the way I was moving and standing they didn’t notice me-- plus most of them were good and hammered so if they did start chasing me I stood a decent chance of getting away.
Anyway, I love stuff like this and it’s very handy, so right on.
