Ok lads we’re gonna make hydrogen.
Yo ned:
1 ice cream tub
2 pencils
Salt
battery and wires
(water) balloons to collect the gas
Get yourself the icecream tub or similar container.
Fil this with salt solution (salt dissolved in water)
but not to the top.
Now get the 2 pencils and sharpen both ends. Its better to sharpen them with a knife just to make sure plenty of the graphite is showing.
Stick the pencils in the salt solution, a fair distance apart with one end of each pencil in the solution and one sticking out. Make sure they dont touch.
Now get the 9v battery and wires and connect one wire to one pencil and the other to the other pencil.
You should notice some bubling at the ends of both pencils.
The one giving of the least amount of bubles is chlorine. a toxic gas, it also bleaches things :)
The one giving of the most of the bubles is giving of Hydrogen which you can you use to make loud bangs. It also lighter than air so you can put it in balloons and have all the fun of the circus!
To fill a balloon with hydrogen fill it with water ( water balloons are best) and then hold it over the bubling pencil so the bubles start to buble up into the ballon.
