Background
A few years back, either my junior or senior year of high school, my brother had informed some friends and I of an abandoned quarry located a few ridges past my grandparent’s house. Apparently he and a friend had walked back their themselves. He said it was used for water purposes and there were some buildings back there and occassionally druggies and couples would head there to do their business in peace. Seeing how the location was near our school at the time, five of us decided to check it out one spring day after school had left out.
Arrival
When we arrived on the road that led back to the site, we had noticed the chains to keep it locked up were already removed. We drove slow and luckily noone seemed to notice (or care), so we continued back the road. Luckily, all of us lived quite far away from the area, so we were ready to say we were lost if anyone was back there. Noone was. The trail back started as gravel, but the further back it was just dirt. We noticed some ATV tracks, however, none of them looked too fresh.
Buildings
Upon arrival, we immediately noticed a few small trailers set up as offices. None of the doors were locked, so we freely roamed through them (there were three or so). Apparently when they shut down, they didn’t bother doing anything cleaning wise. There were desks, phones, lights, signs and a lot of paperwork and books left. Judging by a few dates in the paperwork, it closed down in the 60’s. Only several things linked it to the future minus the worn out condition. Those being empty beer cans and a condom wrapper that had expired in 99.
Two of us skimmed through some paperwork. It was fairly typical paperwork, employee information (with addresses, phone numbers and even social security numbers!), there were also accounts, books for equipment operation (most of which I believe was relocated, some of the only stuff) We tossed a few old phones and lights in the trunk of my friend’s car, as well as some huge equipment stickers and some danger signs. We discussed coming back for desks with a friend’s truck, but noone really needed or wantedone, nor were any of us interested in selling them.
Water Tower
After leaving the buildings and stashing the stuff in the trunk, a kid and I decided to check out a water tower nearby. It was rusting fairly badly, but the ladder was still in good shape, so we climbed up it. There was nothing of any interest, except for a nice view. After that, we climbed down and the group of us decided it was a good time to leave.
Rundown
The building was interesting, a time capsule of sorts from a previous generation. We left the majority of stuff there, only taking several items as mentioned. We decided not to damage anything or trash the place for future explorers. Looking back, it was a good way to hangout and kill some time with minimal risk of getting in trouble. My friend still has the ’loot’ we took and tested the phone at his house afterwards and said it still worked.
I’ve explored several other sites over the years and if I get a positive response, I’ll post some of them. |
