-One saturday morning my 3 friends and I were walking back 2 our niehborhood after a night out at a party. We were walking along this road that runs under Iron* Hill (name has been changed). It was craig that noticed it at first, the industrial painted shy blue, in a vain attempt 2 make it dissapear into the sky, water tower looming up above. It was also covered in graphiti by local kids with nothing better 2 amuse themselves on saturday nights. After we snuck back into our rooms and slept a bit more we all decided 2 meet at Tom’s house and go climb it. ..
We brought our skate shoes, some long rope (we borrowed* that from a flag pole) and wire cutters when we met there at around dusk. After trudging up the steep rocky hill with all the abandoned remnants of the old Ski Lift scattered about and twisted upon thier crumbling concrete foundations we got 2 the water tower. Up here (it was summer so the wind wasn’t biting cold) we put on out bike gloves (for grip) and headed 2 the base of the water tower. We could all squeese through the gate that was chained shut rather loosely, so we didn’t have 2 cut anything with the bolt cutters. We then looked up at the water tower. It became silouetted in the golden sunset. We found the latter but it was abut 8 feet of the ground. So we found a bit of twisted metal and fashined a crude grappling hook by tying it 2 the rope.
After several infuriating tries we got the hook caught on the latter grate. I pulled myself up the rope and lifted the latch and the latter rolled down almost catching me and taking me down with it.
And that was when we started the ascent. Believe me, when someone tells you not 2 look down, you don’t look down. There was a metal cage agound the latter so that was a bit more added security ut if the kid above us slipped he was taking the rest of us with him. The higher u got the more the wind blasted at you. If for one moment you glanced down this sinking feeling, like u actually were falling took ahold of you. There was also this slight urge 2 actually let urself fall... But we finally made it 2 the top, and saw all of Iowa City lights glowing on the horizon, throwing up a glare. Yet we could still see the cold blue stars above.
