First of all, please read the entire egg, as I have included some tips that I have learned through personal experiences.
Some members of Rotteneggs.com already know this, but I am mostly doing this because our younger and newer members don’t. I’m also doing this because there are eggs on this subject already, but this is explained better, and has good text instructions, as well as pictures (and video) in case you get lost. You won’t get lost though, unless your a complete fuck up... :D
This is not copied and pasted, I take pride in making all of my posts and eggs as understandable as possible, and that’s why I try to spell every word accurately. Just because an egg has good spelling and grammer, doesn’t mean that it’s copied.
Before you start bitching about how there are eggs about this already, take a look at them. Not that good, right? They are mostly just 1 paragraph long, with bad spelling, and really hard to understand.
Now, onto the egg...
What you need
- Some aluminum foil
- Cutting utensil (I used a scalpel from Michael’s Arts & Crafts)
- Matches
[Kua-Zee brand is best for the job](wood or the matchbook kind, the latter is preferred because it is light)
(Paperbook Matches below)
- Candle or other ignition source
- Pin or needle
Instructions
First, get the aluminum foil and cut a rectangle out, like so...
Now, get your match (I used the wooden kind because they are strudy) and place the pin against it...
Note; The pin should not go past half of the matchead.
Place the match (while still holding the pin against it) onto the small rectangle of foil...
Fold the foil in half...
Then bend the upper half of the foil towards you (downwards). Then just wrap the rest of the foil around the matchhead. After folding the foil around the match head, you should get something like this...
Make sure the foil is securley wrapped around the match head. Pull the pin (or needle) out now.
Now, for the ignition source. I use this kind of candle (as shown in the "materials" section)...
You can buy them in packs of 12, and they are really cheap. Pretty much any type of candle works, all you need to do is make it so the foil part of the rocket is directly above the flame, facing a 45+ degree angle. Here is how I set the launch up (enjoy the flame made in Photoshop!)...
You can also bend a paperclip a certain way, and then use a lighter to start heating up the foil part of the rocket. I don’t recommend it though, because sometimes the lighter flame starts to swirve around because of the wind, and the lighter starts heating up, and when you try to light it again, you burn your small fingers... :( ... Barbeque lighters work best for the paper clip launching method. I always try to keep the exhaust facing up, I don’t know why, but it seems to work.
How they work
You know how when you light a match, lots of smoke starts coming from the burning match powder? This is basicly what this rocket uses, only the smoke (or gases) gets pressurised, and then it escapes through the exhaust port with such force, that it is able to lift weight of the match.
Take a look at my awesome picture that was made using Paint if your puny brain didn’t understand the paragraph above...
Some tips from Kua-Zee
Remember, your first batch of rockets will most likely not be that good, but just keep practicing. Also, keep in mind that these rockets produce a lot of smoke, which smells more powerful than that of just a match lighting.
Try storing your rockets for later use somewhere in a dry place. I made a batch of 10 a week ago, and stored them in my small treasure chest thing...
To my suprise, they worked much better than the ones that I set off right aftert making them. I don’t know why though, but make sure that when you pick them up, you don’t accidentaly shut the exhaust port closed.
For faster ignition of the rocket, try to stay away from wind. You can also make a "wind barrier" using a box or a book.
Caution Muthafucka!
- When setting the rocket off using the paper clip method, try to keep your hands away from the foil, as the foil can blast off and hit you, causing a painful burn.
- I didn’t think I would have to say this, but...do this outdoors! These rockets produce lots of smoke, that like I said, make a very powerful smell that even an air sanitizer can’t hide.
- Don’t do this near dry plants, as the rocket can fly off and start a fire.
- Don’t stand in front of the rocket (for obvious reasons).
Videos
The videos below are on my website (look around and tell me what you think!). These are 2 attempts (both under 1.5MB).

Successful Paperbook Match Rocket Attempt
FAQ (Frequently asked Questions)
Q; Why does the foil blast off, and leave the match behind?
A; It may be because the match is too heavy, or because you didn’t squeeze the foil onto the match head. You can also just try making another batch.
Q;How far can these rockets fly?
A;I heard they can fly up to 30 feet. I’m pretty sure they used a match from the paper matchbooks, the really cheap kind.
Q;Will you marry me?
A;Yes.
Another use
After lots of trial and error trying to make a perfect batch of rockets, I figured out (accidentaly) that if you light the match on the wood part below the foil, the powder burns and blasts the foil off (like a gun). Sometimes this works, and other times it doesn’t.
Credits
I want to thank Tyrant for inspiring me to make this egg after I did a presentation of my rocket via webcam. I also want to thank everyone that took the time to read the whole egg, as I have put so much effort into this egg. Most of the original pics came out blurry, so I took new pics. That is how dedicated I am.
Please leave any feedback or questions that you might have.

Quote: Whats the farthest you’ve gotten them to fly?
A; Just over 10 feet. The rocket was stored in my little treasure chest thing, and it was a paperbook match. It looked really crappy, but I decided to try it. And it worked. |

 | Dec 28, 2005 2:57 pm - This is amazing. Great Job...*5 |

 | Dec 28, 2005 3:06 pm - lol koll egg what you should do is put a fuse on it and call it your home made bottle rocket 5* |

 | Dec 28, 2005 3:10 pm - ALSO!
You may be able to ignite a rocket by using a magnifying glass to magnify a sun ray and directing the ray onto the matchhead. It helps to color the foil black if you try it since black absorbs light alot better, meaning it will get hot faster. |

 | Dec 28, 2005 3:23 pm - hey kua-zee wat will happen if you use 3 mathes for tis will it fly farther.....5 ***** ..good egg |

 | Dec 28, 2005 3:27 pm -
Quote: hey kua-zee wat will happen if you use 3 mathes for tis will it fly farther
A; Very good question. I tried that with 4 wooden matches, and it didn’t even lift off the ground. It spewed lots of smoke everywhere, though. It was too heavy to lift off of the ground, but if you want, try it with paperbook matches. They are much lighter, so it might just work. |

 | Dec 28, 2005 5:35 pm - nice egg, 5* and faves.
does it work with safety matches |

 | Dec 28, 2005 5:47 pm - cool 5* since i dont fell like looking to see if it was copied (not saying it is). and is that you and a crosssman pump nblack 760 w/ scope? |

 | Dec 28, 2005 6:33 pm -
Quote: does it work with safety matches
A; It works with pretty much any type of match, except wet/damn ones.
Quote: is that you and a crosssman pump nblack 760 w/ scope?
A;Yes, and it’s actually a 764, but close enough... :) |

 | Dec 28, 2005 8:56 pm - 5*’s and in favourites... Good work ;) |

 | Dec 28, 2005 9:04 pm -

Quote: i tried that yester day it didnt work i left it proped on a candel like in ur pick i used paper matches and i left and came back like 2-3 hours later and nothing happend what did i do wrong?
A;Dude, it doesn’t take that long. The powder probably burned while you were gone. You probably didn’t set the match directly above the flame. Either that, or you didn’t securely fasten the foil onto the matchhead. The launch doesn’t take mroe than 1 min. if you do it right. |

 | Dec 29, 2005 5:48 pm - this is good but u didnt give any directions on how to use the paper book matches post those directions.. then 5***** |

 | Dec 29, 2005 6:04 pm - spaz, the directions are pretty obvious. Just prop them on a candle, put a flame near the foil, and they launch. |

 | Dec 30, 2005 11:51 am - That’s interesting how much power those little bastards have in that video clip. Neato! 5 stars for you you crazy asian! |
