First off, I realize this isn’t the most useful egg in the world. Still, I figure it might be able to help a few people out there.

A quick background story, you can skip over in if you’re not interested.
Background (Story)

I learned this all in high school, when I participated in TSA. TSA is a national organization, Technological Student Association. It’s designed to give students a jump start in technology, with various categories from making videos and graphics to lego building contests to computer stuff like drafting. Luckily, I had some friends who were good with video editing, so I tagged up with them and did a crappy graphic, just because we got out of school for most of Wednesday and all of Thursday and Friday, and only missed Saturday until about noon.

The regional "conference" was held at a ritsy ski lodge’s hotel. Luckily, the categories we entered, were just drop offs. That meant that after we dropped off our stuff Wednesday afternoon, all we had to do was attend a few lunches and dinners and two or three boring meetings, which totaled only a few hours all together, less than than the two and a half days of school.

The Info
My friend had brought along his N64 (which were still state of the art at the time) and I had brought my Orion VCR, which always worked like a charm. Along with our two roommates, we locked our room door with a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. We then pulled the TV they had left us, with only basic cable channels (you had to pay for extras, which we were told we wouldn’t be allowed to). The cable was locked on with a plate and ran up to the cable box, for ordering PPVs, something else we were told we would not be allowed to do.

My friend got out a flathead screwdriver (never fool around without one) and with a bit of force on the corners, the cable plate came right off with no damage done. I ran my VCR to Cable cord from the VCR to the TV and plugged the cable box into my VCR. We set it on the floor and hooked up the N64 and played some video games. Every morning before we left and the maids made their way around, we unhooked the VCR and stuck it in my suitcase.

When we got tired of playing video games, we turned on the TV. The basic cable was getting a bit boring, so on a whim, I messed with my remote, remembering the autoseek mode I had programmed into my VCR. It scanned through the hundred plus channels and we noticed a few blips in the upper which made it definitely worth while. After it finished up, we simply flipped out of basic and right into American Pie, which a non-TSA customer at the hotel must’ve ordered. The hotel’s cable setup must’ve been pretty shitty and sent it to other rooms as well. We enjoyed the movie and afterwards played some games and went to sleep. The next day, we made sure to take a break from gaming every so often and managed to catch The Thomas Crown Affair from the beginning.

At the end of the trip, we rigged their plating back up, with no damage minus the fact that it was easier to pull apart.

Our friends in another room, weren’t as lucky. After our ease with the cable box, one of them did some damage to the plating. Luckily, their cable stayed working and one had a cell phone. He called a college kid he knew who was on his way up to visit and asked him to bring his soldering kit. With a quick bit of work, however, their box looked and still worked fine and noone was the wiser.

This hotel did not use digital cable, so you may run into trouble with that, unless you have a digital cable descrambler which you can get off e-bay (descramblers, mind you, are legal to own but illegal to use.) Also, we had a good bit of luck, because the hotel was fairly crowded and although the staff didn’t exactly care for all the kids running around, the staff was far too busy to be checking rooms.

If you ever go on a field trip to a hotel, I definitely recommend bringing this stuff along.

On my 8th grade french trip to montreal my friends who i shared a room with tried to do this, but a bit differentally. One brought his ps2 and some games and dvd’s and also brought a cable connecter for it( so you could replace the cable with the ps2) but the tv had a small round metal "thing" blocking you from taking out the cable. Now he tried to get it off by gentally moving it up and down, but then just broke it off. Which in turn broke the cable. The people in the room across from us used a penny to take the metal thing off, and had a halo party, while we had no cable and no ps2.
