Okay, I apologize in advance that I don’t have any pictures. However, this exploration took place a few years ago. My great aunt has a nice little cabin out in the country by a nice creek, where family reunions are held every year. She always had boats out, which noone besides us "kids" were really interested in using.
My brother and I took a few trips to the other side of the creek bed which happened to be the end of a golf course. Noone was on the course that we saw, however, we didn’t explore much of it. We found a few golf balls and took them back and sold them to a relative for a buck each.
He then told us that there was an abandoned brick house down the creek a little ways on the other side if we were interested in a little exploration. With nothing better to do, we decided to check it out.
The building was obviously not inhabited for quite a few years, besides some kids who must’ve partied there, as we found some empty beer cans and cigarette packs. Judging by the decor and age, it hadn’t been a house or a cabin since the 60’s or so. Also, the brick house was sitting very close to the creek, so I imagine it had flooded. I know there had been a bad flood in Pennsylvania in 1972, so they might’ve abandoned at that point.
The building was not that large. There were three doors, two leading into a small kitchen and another into a living room/den type "main room". There were no bedrooms to be found. In the center of the main room was a fireplace that had been smashed up and torn apart with a lot of loose bricks laying around. This is where the majority of the empty beer cans and cigarette packs were laying. There were some scattered other places and outside the building.
My bro and I were around 14 and 15 at the time and a little jealous that some kids, probably older than us, had such a cool place to hang out. We decided it would be fun to get them back. Gathering all the bricks we could, as well as a small table from the kitchen we blocked off both of the doors that led into the kitchen. The one using the table, which we propped on it’s side and used a few bricks for extra support, would take quite a bit of kicking to open. The other, we simply built a brick wall the majority of the way up the door and then placed several rows of bricks behind the end where it opened up toward the wall, so it would prove difficult to open as well.
Finally, we had the door that lead into the main room. My bro exited the building as I grabbed two more bricks and balanced them on top of the door. Being extra skinny and with my bro holding his hand by the bricks in case they fell, I slid out and we carefully shut the door with only a bit of a crack open. We decided to test it out first and my bro kicked open the door quickly and the two bricks fell down with thuds onto the floor. We laughed and set the bricks back up once again and explored outside.
Down by the creek, we found an old chair that must’ve went with the table. We were a bit mad we didn’t find it earlier to use with blocking the doors. My bro picked it up and tossed it into the creek and we hopped in the boat and paddled back.
The following year we returned to the family reunion and as soon as we got the chance, we paddled down to check out the cabin. The doors had been opened up again, however the bricks that we got from the fireplace were now stacked outside. Also, we noticed that someone had torn open a screen window leading into the kitchen and busted it out as well.
My bro and I laughed at our previous work and decided to leave another treat for the inhabitants. We gathered a dozen or so bricks and carefully propped open the doors and set two or three bricks on top of each of the doors. We then set two bricks at the base of each door, so that someone would have to push hard on the door to enter. We climbed out of the window and left. Unfortunately, our sister and some of our cousins wanted to check out the cabin and had gotten permission from our parents and their parents to go. So we had to go up with them and kick the bricks down in front of one of the main room’s door and sit around while they looked at everything. Finally when they left, we set up that door again and climbed out. Then the assholes left with the boat, so my bro and I had to swim and wade back to the cabin, which was upstream. If that wasn’t bad enough, we passed them on the way because they were too weak to get the boat up themselves. When we got up and grabbed something to eat, one of them swam up and said they couldn’t row the boat up, so we had to go back out and get them and the boat. Still, it was well worth it. Sadly, I have no follow up really, as I quit going to the family reunions after that trip.
