Ok... I haven’t put out a new egg in a while, so here goes.
Today, I shall be informing those of you who are less able with the computer, how to change your IP address. You might want to change you IP address, if you have been banned from a favorite chat room, or a favorite game, from which they use an IP ban to get rid of you.
Before you start flaming me, this is without using a proxy server, and the IP address is kept until you renew it again. Again, for those of you who know how to do this, this egg isn’t for you, so don’t flame me for it.
I even have pictures for it all :-)
First step is to turn on your computer.
Next is too determine how you are connected to the internet. You will have one of 3 connection methods.
Connection through a dialup router. If this is so, all you need to do is disconnect, and reconnect again and you should have a new IP address.
Direct connection through a DSL/Cable modem of some sort. To determine this, look for some sort of router. If you can’t find one, you probably have a direct connect, but you never know. Just to be sure, do the following to check.
A.)First you need to bring up the Command Prompt. To do this, using Windows XP, Click on Start -> Run
B.)Then in the window that comes up, type ‘command’ without the ‘
C.)Then this window should come up, the text will be different, but that’s ok :-)
D.)Once that comes up, type ‘ipconfig /all’ with the space, and without the ‘ in the window.. Then hit enter. Something like this will then come up.
E.)If you have a 198.162.x.xxx IP address, then you are not on a direct connect, and will have to do this differently from here on. Just scroll down to the ‘3. Connect through a router’ section, and continue of from there. If you have a different IP address, you are on a direct connection.
F.)Either way, write down the number that shows up in the ‘IP Address’ Section.
In order to get a new IP address, you will need to be off the internet for a little bit, so don’t interrupt anything important.
G.)First you will need to release you IP address, to do this, you type in the Command Prompt window that you have open and type ‘ipconfig /release’
H.)Once you have completed this, you will have to unplug your modem, and once plugged back in, reset it. I usually leave unplugged for about a minute or so, but if that isn’t changing the IP address at all, try leaving it unplugged for a longer amount of time, first 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then 20 minutes, and so on.
J.)Once you have plugged your modem back in, and reset it, you then need to go back to your command prompt window, and type ‘ipconfig /renew’ again, without the ‘.
Congratulations, you now have a new IP Address
3. Connect through a router
Ok, for here, you are going to have to do the same as a direct connection all the way up to step F.)
And now for the new part
H.) First off, you will have to navigate to your routers login page. This will usually be found at xxx.xxx.0.1 with the xxx.xxx being the number which you found on your ‘ipconfig /all’ action. Mine is 192.168.0.1 Navigate there using your web browser of choice, and it will ask for a username and password. I’m not too sure about other router brands, but mine, being a D-Link is set as Username: admin and with no password
I.)Next, again, I only know for sure using D-Link, but look for it on others, it shouldn’t be too hard to find. Go to the Status Tab, then you should be on device info. The Page should look like this.
J.) Next, you simply click the ‘DHCP Release’ Button, and then you will have to unplug your modem, and once plugged back in, reset it. I usually leave unplugged for about a minute or so, but if that isn’t changing the IP address at all, try leaving it unplugged for a longer amount of time, first 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then 20 minutes, and so on.
K.) Once you have finished doing that, simply hit ‘DHCP Renew’ and a new IP address should show up :-)
L.) Congratulations, you are the proud owner of a new IP address
Hope this helped. If you down rate this egg, please comment telling as to why you down rated it. If you up rate this egg, it would be nice to know too, as comments are always nice :-) |

What did you mean with unplugging the modem. Like the phone line, or the actual modem? Thats the only part I got confused at.

 | Jun 05, 2006 7:30 pm - This only works if your ISP dosent use the permanate IP add, I work for netscape and this will not work the only way to do this would be to use another site and they flip on you if the police ask, |

 | Oct 19, 2006 10:48 am - there is a ot easier way to do this ~ download a dhcp forcer | |
