*Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and download the latest nightly build of the linux kernel, they are labelled YYYY-MM-DD-kernel.bin.gz . Do NOT download the YYYY-MM-DD-kernel.bin.gz.asc file, it is useless. Of course, YYYY-MM-DD is today’s date, if it hasn’t been updated yet it might be yesterday’s. You don’t need YYYY-MM-DD-podzilla.gz in this tutorial, since we will be using floydzilla, which already includes doom and a bunch of other games & features. If you want to use podzilla instead of floydzilla, you will have the option of doing this just before the step explaining how to install floydzilla.
Yes, we will be using floydzilla, which is quite up to date and has many more 3rd party features than the normal podzilla build.
Put all the files you downloaded in the same folder so you don’t get confused.
1. Extract the .rar file "iPod Linux Installer Modded.rar". You now should have a folder, "iPod Linux Installer Modded".
2. Extract your latest kernel, YYYY-MM-DD-kernel.bin.gz. It should produce a file, YYYY-MM-DD-kernel.bin. Just rename this to linux.bin. (IMPORTANT: If you have ’hide extensions for known file types’ checked in your folder options for windows, the .bin extension will be hidden. In that case you will be renaming it to ’linux’ since it’s already a .bin file. Most mistakes made in this tutorial are made here. If you read this section carefully it will work for you. Simply make sure you EXTRACT the .bin file and don’t just rename the archive to linux.bin. Also, make sure you are using the -kernel.bin.gz file and not the -podzilla.gz file.
3. Move your linux.bin file into the "iPod Linux Installer Modded" FOLDER. It will ask you to replace, say yes.
4. Connect your iPod, if it’s not already there, and make sure it’s fully loaded by seeing if it’s in my computer.
5. Now, go inside the "iPod Linux Installer Modded" folder, and run "ipodlinux-installer.exe". It will ask you if you want to check for updates, UNCHECK this. click next. You’ll have to choose which OS you want to boot first - i strongly recommend the default apple os (I’ll show you how to switch to linux a little later). After that it will ask you if you want to make a backup. MAKE ONE!!! This helped me get out of shit once when I screwed this up. It doesn’t backup all your music, just the OS, I assume you still have your music on your computer, but if you’re like me, you don’t (small hard drive) so cross your fingers or make backups somehow on another external harddrive. It should work, but there is a small chance you screw things up. Personally, I was a bit risky and I didn’t have a copy of my songs anywhere (except on my cds). I was fine. Its up to you... After the backup is done, it’s ready to actually install. Click next. It will start installing ipodlinux. Just let it do it’s thing. If you switch between open windows, the installer might go blank but don’t worry, it’s still installing. Just leave the window maximised, it won’t take too long... Then the window won’t go blank! After it’s done, it will ask you to disconnect your iPod but DONT do it yet... Just exit the installer by clicking finish.
If you want to use the regular podzilla, follow intructions on the "updating podzilla" page in the main ipodlinux wiki http://ipodlinux.org/Updating_podzilla. Scroll down to ’winpods’. Just skip step 6 if you want to use podzilla instead of floydzilla.

6. Unzip the file "floydzilla.zip" and run floydzilla.exe. It will begin installing the graphical interface. Just click next when required, select your iPod’s drive letter in my computer, follow the very simple instructions and agree to the license. When the installer finishes, eject your iPod.

==THE TEST==
After you’ve ejected, your iPod should reboot... If not, do a reboot by holding menu and select together (might be menu and play for first to third generation ipods, I’m not sure, i don’t have one... except you’re supposed to have a 4g while doing this tutorial ) until you see the apple logo. If that doesn’t work, flip hold on and then off again and try once more.
When you see the apple logo, you can boot into ipodlinux by flipping on hold untill you see a "DOS-like" loading screen. You can switch hold off then. Or, you can hold rewind till you see linux loading as above. After it’s done loading, you *should* be in ipodlinux. It should look a bit like the normal apple operating system, except with different menu items and ’podzilla’ or ’floydzilla’ (depending on which one you chose) at the top.
==RETURN TO APPLE OS===
To return to apple OS when you’re in ipodlinux, just go to power-> shutdown iPod or reboot ipod (when you’re in linux), making sure you don’t switch hold on while you see the apple logo or else you’ll just get back into ipodlinux. You can also hold menu and select (or menu and play for 1-3G, but once again, no reason why you should have a 3g while doing this tutorial ) for a few seconds until you reset. Just don’t touch anything when you see the apple logo and you’ll be back to the normal iPod interface!
==RESTORING THE BACKUP IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG==
If you get the sick ipod icon or the folder error when you start ipodlinux, you can restore your backup you created in the install. Just connect your ipod to your computer (making sure you’re in the apple os or the black and white disk mode (hold select + play while booting). ), and then in the command line (start ->run) type "X:\path to the folder where your installer is\ipodlinux-installer.exe" /r INCLUDING THE QUOTATION MARKS. X is the drive you’re using and the path is the folder your installer is in. This will prompt you to restore the backup. Keep the installer folder for future use or else your backup will be gone. This is the easiest way to uninstall ipodlinux, there is another way described here:
You can use this if it’s not working, to totally clear linux off your ipod before trying again.
Just scroll down to the ’fake update’ section. It’s pretty easy to follow.
If worse comes to worse, you can always reformat your ipod using the apple updater. If you ipod is really, really dead, search the forums for solutions, it’s most probably not gone yet!

Apr 02, 2006 12:24 pm - Be careful linux can send your ipod to hell, you might end up with one expensive paper weight, then when u try to send it to apple, they’ll see it was running linux and they wont fix it.

I messed up and tried valiantly to save my iPod, but nothing worked. I abandoned my iPod in an old box. Later, I found out that the Windows reformatter doesn’[t work when you kill it, but the HP one will. I saved my Nano, and I tried again and got it to work.
