Free Internet on a LapTop
Firstly, I’d like to apologize for my previous Egg, which was dropped for spamming. I did not know that what I was doing was spamming, but realise now. Believe me, I won’t do it again.
Welcome everyone! This Egg is a follow-up to my previous egg of wardriving on a PSP (http://www.rotteneggs.com/r3/show/se/178640.html) . I realise that since not everyone owns a PSP, that a laptop based wardriving Egg might be found helpful by some people. I am willing to take an oath that none of this material is copied or pasted, and also that I put alot of effort into these Eggs. I’d appreciate your comments, enjoy!

Brief Introduction
Firstly, I’ll start by telling you about "wardriving". What is it you ask? Simply put, wardriving is a method of stealing and accessing insecure wireless internet connections. It usually involves driving around in a car, hence the name wardriving. Being underaged like me, you might find driving a difficult feat, so, the only method I fully understand is by foot. If that doesn’t answer your question, use this link: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/wardriving.html _______________________________________________________________
Material Needed
When wardriving, the most basic piece of equipment is a laptop. The laptop must be able to scan, and pick up wireless connections. There are other pieces of equipment though, but they complicate things slightly. If you are simply going to go out and about your neighborhood, picking up connections and surfing the net, then the following materials are irrelivent. Nonetheless, I ought to list them anyway:
-Laptop Computer - At least a pentium 100 with a free PCMCIA slot and serial port for GPS.
-802.11b-compliant wireless ethernet card
-The Software, Linux, BSD, Windows, Mac, everyone is supported.
-Optional: GPS receiver for location tracking.
-A way to get around, a car, bus, subway, walking, bike.

Basic Method Now once you understand all that, let the fun begin. This is the part that tells you what to do:
-Ok, their are basically two ways you can wardive in your neighborhood. For quick surfing, gather your gear, and start walking around your neighborhood. Scan evey now and again for a connection, and if you find one that is at least of 40% strength or more, use it! Take a seat, some where comfortable, and access that connection.
-Another way to feed off someone else’s connection is probably easier than the one above. You must have a neighbor close by, with a strong connection to do this. This can be used as a permenant internet connection, as long as the victim doesn’t catch you. It is done in the privacy of your home, but is easier to track down.

Tricks of the Trade
Through my wardriving experiences, I have learnt many "do’s" and "dont’s". Read these carefully, as they can be extremely important when you wardrive.
Do’s - When trying to strengthen a connection, try altering the position of the laptop. Even the slightest change in direction or height can change the connection.
- Also, try to avoid walls, trees, or anything that may come in the way of the WiFi waves.
- Make sure you use some sort of a Proxifier, to reduce the chances of getting tracked down. Unprotected connections probably means that there is no virus protection, so use some sort of a Fire Wall too.
- Try to search for connections in dense neighborhoods, as connections will be stronger.
- Learn how to use your browser properly!
- Understand all the laws in your country relating to computer crimes!
Dont’s - Do not use the same connection, same place, or area more than once a month. URL logs allow the user to see what you’ve been on, and when, making it much easier to track you down.
- If you do happen to get questioned, do not act suspicios, apologize, or sound guilty in any way. Wardriving is not illegal, and as long as you are not on their property, you don’t have to move.
- Don’t be stupid and go on porn, unless you are using a Proxy. That is highly emberassing, if you get caught.
- Don’t try to wardrive at night, unless you are in a car. It is highly suspicios, and hard to explain if you get questioned.

Other Pointers
Wardriving is not illegal, but you are still liable to get in trouble. There are many precautions you can take to assure you don’t get caught, but if you are unfortunate enough to get caught, remember this: Lose all the guilt, as you are not charging them any extra. Don’t act like you have commited a crime when being questioned. Being nervous is normal, but relax and stay calm. Answer truthfully, as you really can’t deny the URLs. Another important thing to remember, is that they are also in the wrong. If they didn’t want anyone to use their connections, they should have taken the necessary precautions to secure it. If they didn’t bother to, its basically an open invitation.
Accessing an open connection is not illegal, but attempting to hack or access a secured netowrk falls under the computer crimes juris diction. Hacking is illegal in all states, and is punishable by law. If you come across a secure connection, ignore it and move on. Also, be cautious about whos connection you access. All CAPs usually means a safe connection, but all lowercase such as "freeaccess" is basically in invitation for trouble.

Closing Statement
Well, that about sums the basics of laptop wardiving up. I’m sorry if you are an experienced wardriver, as this is clearly for beginners. Thanks for checking this Egg out! I’ll post more in depth in wardriving later, bye for now!

Some good pictures related to laptops and Wardriving:
Apr 06, 2006 12:37 pm - I have no wireless connections near me so my laptop can’t pick any up, and I’ve already got built in WiFi
=D
But still, very good egg! 5*
Apr 07, 2006 12:27 pm - AntiTrek, as I clearly stated this was for beginners and was very basic. Pay attention when you read and you won’t make an ass of your self! Thanks to all the other people who voted and commented :-D
Apr 07, 2006 2:37 pm - my dad has been using someones signal for over 18 months on his laptop, if someones signal invades his private living space then fuck them ! it’s free game
sooooooooo... i can’t have free internet unless im on a street corner or in a starbucks?
is there no way to get it in my house...?
(provided my neighbor isn’t using a strong connection)
Not that I am aware of, sorry. I guess you could buy a really strong scanning device or antenna or something. . . I’ll research it for you in a minute.
Apr 13, 2006 10:46 pm - Ok, this is to the starwars guy, I like starwars and star trek. Why do u have to hate star trek? To legend, why do I need to do this when \I can do it in my own house? I have wifi inside. See, its a win-win situation. (for me, that is)

May 03, 2006 6:03 pm - yeah ive been doing that for a while, i live in an apart complex, so ive picked up linksys on my laptop. but im wondering how is it possible that they can see what sites i go on?
May 04, 2006 5:58 pm - lol uh oh. they can see what sites you go on by checking the main url logs from the router in the router application. lol dont go on anything you shouldnt be on ;-)
May 26, 2006 3:39 pm - DOER you stupid n00b. I’m not even gonna bother, yes i am because sadly many people on this site think like you.
Firefox, IE, opera, netscape are what we call browsers. They are used to view the world wide web. Every single fucking site you can think of is not stored on your damn computer/in one program (firefox as you think).
The browsers help BROWSE the content of other computers or servers. But for them to work you have to be plugged in to the big network. YOu know usually with a phone line or cable of some sort.
With that knowledge, what good is a browser gonna do you if you don’t have a connection? None unless you use it locally (just ignore that so you don’t get confused). YOu missed the whole fucking concept, and therefore, you my friend are a n00b.
Good day sir.
Jan 17, 2007 7:16 pm - You make so complicated.. all i do is sit in my living room and i get my neighors signal i even get it in my room...its not worth walking and trying to find just get internet t ur house...u dont need any materials just a laptop :S u make something so simple so complicated
Jan 20, 2007 5:05 pm - ive gotten 3 unsecured signals since november of 2006 and since then 2 of the connections that were insecured got a wep code. so that must mean they should have known i was using their internet. i did go on porn but who cares. i know who im stealing from and this guy is freaking messed up from his mind. i used to get it in my desk and living room, now the signal sucks it gets getting worse as days go by, so dud ive been using it since 4 months i am never going to get caught.
Apr 29, 2007 11:40 pm - :|
most connections have a password,
Or if theyre smart (like my computer) it allows only listed people like i have
Only give access to:
Ip:203.130.50.30
Ip2 205.604.204
Ip3:305.604.79
and only them can join oh and 5 because i like the pictures and i have that wireless ’Router’ but its not a router :| its just a modem and mine only has 1 antenna
