HOW TO MAKE A FIRECRACKER AND MORTAR FOR AUSSIES - By Pyrotech. Made on: Friday 14th of April 2006
Okay. In this egg I will explain how to make a simple firecracker and mortar. I will be explaining how to make it from complete scratch (including tubes etc). This egg is mostly for Aussies(one of which I am) because we can’t obtain chemicals etc.
The Cracker Tube And Mortar You will need:
1 sheet of A4 paper
A pencil
A connecter pen
A ruler
A hobby knife/sharp blade
A hot glue gun + glues(duh)
Making The Cracker Case Step 1 Rule a line vertically down the side of the page. Cut along this line with your hobby knife.
Step 2 Wrap the paper(ruler width) around the end of the pencil that you don’t write with. Leave about 2.5cm’s of paper unrolled. Put a thin line of hot glue down the edge of this and roll it up. Wait for the glue to dry and pull the paper off the pencil.
This should be your tube.
Step 3 Squeeze out a blob of hot glue and put the tube down with any end on the glue.
Step 4 Put the nozzle of the hot glue gun down the top of the tube and give it one big squeeze. Let the glue dry.
Step 5 Put some hot glue around the top of the case so the papers dont rip.
Step 6 Cut around the bottom of the tube.
Your finished tube should look like this
Making The Mortar Step 1 Rule 1 line the size of a ruler vertically down the page. Rule another two of these next to it.
Step 2 Cut on the 3rd line. Roll this paper around the connecter pen and leave about 2.5cm’s at the end. Put a thin line of hot glue down the edge a roll the rest up. Lay your tube down and put a line of glue around the inside. Let it dry. Your finished mortat and tube should look like this
Making The Filling You Will Need:
Drill + Drill bit the size of a sparkler
One sparkler
Pliers
16 caps(for cap guns)
Hobby knife/sharp blade
Small container
Your firecracker tube
Step 1 Drill a hole through the end of your tube that has the glue in it.
Step 2 Using the pliers, break the metal piece off the sparkler. Put this inside your hole.
Step 3 Cut one of the caps off using your hobby knife.
Step 4 Put the cap into the pliers and gently squeeze(sounds mad, but gently squeeze)
Step 5 Do this for all 16 of the caps. You should have about this much powder (I have a slight amount less because one blew up in my face because I squeezed it too tightly)
Step 6 Pour this powder into your small container, Or you could pour it straight into your cracker tube( I made a little funnel out of paper and poured it through there. Once the powder is in the tube, fill the rest of the tube with hot glue. This should be your finished product
Loading To load the cracker into the mortar, do it like so
To fire, I taped 4 sparkler wires to the side of the mortar and stuck it into the ground. To use the mortar, put the powder from 4 caps around the sparkler where it enters the tube. Load it into your mortat as usual.
I am going to upload the video of the cracker exploding tomorrow, or maybe the day after. I won’t record the mortar because my mate stole it and I can’t be bothered making a new one.
F.A.Q Q:Why does it just smoke and not make any noise?
A:This will happen because you haven’t sealed the ends properly. I advise you go over both ends with glue next time you make one.
Q:16 caps does not fill my tube up the whole way, is this okay?
A:Yes this is okay, 16 is enough caps... Just trust me
Q:How long did it take you to make this egg?

btw should i make an egg about how to extract the powder from the caps? cause with my method i never explode any unless i want to and just today i made a pile for the pen launcher thing, a wheel of 8 caps takes me about 40 seconds and with no casualties.
i guess i can get a friend to make a vid of me extracting the powder and upload it as an egg or something.

Oh, ive heard that there is some Chinease bloke in Footscray who sells little fire works like roman candles and stuff. i myself havent been there yet, but more at least half of my school has XD
