The Idea
Another egg about magnets from me. This time it shows how to build a linear magnetic accerator. This is sometimes referred to as a Gauss Cannon or a coil gun. My rig did not work as well as it could’ve because of my magnets strange shape. These are the only neodynium magnets I had, therefore I had to use them. They still work though.
Materials
- Some sort of groove or ridge ball bearing could fit in, without rolling to the sides. I just used the space between two tiles in the bathroom.
- Magnets. Must be relatively strong. Neodynium works great. Best in a disk shape, like this.
- Ball bearings or other magnetic balls.
So to sum it up, you need this.
How To
First, take your magnet, and place it in the ridge so that the north and south poles go in the direction of the ridge. Now place ball bearings at either the north or south end of the magnet. You might want to experiment with how many balls you use. Four works best for my magnets.
Now place a ball bearing a little but behind the side without the group of balls.
Now give it a little push, and it will start rolling towards it, picking up speed, and hitting the magnet, transferring the momentum through the balls, all the way to the last bearing, and it will shoot out like this GIF shows. Works a little bit like Newton’s cradle.
Now if you want to create a chain reaction, just create two sets of magnets, like this.
Push the ball forward once again, and watch it hit the first set, firing off one ball. That ball travels towards the next magnet, and propels another ball bearing out. This can be done with as many sets of magnets and bearings as you wish, but I only had two magnets, and could only do two sets.
Interesting Videos
I happned to find two videos on YouTube about Gauss Cannons.
The first is a simple Gauss Cannon like the one I showed you. You can see how his fires the ball bearing faster, because he had a better magnet shape.

The next one is a very complex and powerful Gauss Cannon that fires real projectiles.

The End
Please don’t be a dumbass and say OBVIOUS! because some of you might not have known this. And even if you did know, I put in a lot of effort into this egg, especially the GIFS, so please rate fairly.

 | May 05, 2006 2:17 am - hmmm.... Id tap that =P 5’erz!! ***** |

 | May 05, 2006 3:03 am - Very nice egg. Five and Favs. |

 | May 05, 2006 4:53 am - cool |

 | May 05, 2006 5:18 am - Cool. The neodymium ones break if you start getting upto about five don’t they? This is cool, I used a ruler and shit. It’s also a gauss gun. |

 | May 05, 2006 5:35 am - This is cooool! |

 | May 05, 2006 7:20 am - pretty cool, 5* |

 | May 05, 2006 8:22 am - if you put this into a long tube you could make a bb turret for a car or something
5* |

 | May 05, 2006 8:37 am - 4* what good is it on the floor? put it in a tube or glue the magnets on a ruler.
explained better in here

 | May 05, 2006 9:16 am - 5***** and fucking trippy dude. |

 | May 05, 2006 12:48 pm - now i have a use for my n-45 magnets fuck those thing are a bitch to pry apart but very cool 5* |

 | May 05, 2006 1:15 pm - this is the EXACT same thing as that ruler idea...only it uses a floor instead of a ruler... |

 | May 05, 2006 1:31 pm - i have magnets like those.. sizzlers i think, but mine are MUCH bigger, and you could rig up an airsoft gun or some trigger opperated mechanism to shoot the first ball when someone openes a door, then the others would go. 5*s because u made me think. |

 | May 05, 2006 2:16 pm - 5* |

 | May 05, 2006 2:33 pm - 5***** this is a really good egg one of the best all week because of the Gif |

 | May 05, 2006 2:36 pm - Make an egg on how to make a really strong gauss gun like the one in the movie ? |

 | May 05, 2006 2:51 pm -
Quote: but i can always go out and steal some
You do that.
Pretty nice egg, and the video of the old dude is from grandillusions.com

Bear_Sark there’s no point in even trying, its very complicated and got expensive parts, look here:

 | May 06, 2006 8:50 pm - Cool trick with magnets. Not very practical but cool none the less. |

 | May 07, 2006 11:01 am - i knowed it from before but u get a 5 coz i had forgotten it |

 | May 07, 2006 12:08 pm - Yeah that would be hard as a mo so i guess this will have to do |

 | May 10, 2006 6:29 am - nice :)

 | May 10, 2006 3:08 pm - cool 5*s |

 | May 12, 2006 10:18 pm - Not that cool, but I can see you put alot of time into it, so you can have a 5*. |

 | May 15, 2006 7:58 am - this is pretty gay and useless! |

 | May 16, 2006 2:59 pm - sweet omg i loved it!! i put it on a ruler with tons of those magnets held tog by tape (this one sites idea) wit lots of those balls and it noked over my clock! u can get some good magnets at magnet4less.com[magnet4le s.com] |

 | May 20, 2006 11:39 am - i did it for some minutes ago and it worked fine i just need some more of these balls
btw.4* |

its the link you put at the end btw thanks it looks cool
i rated your wit a 5 |

 | Jun 30, 2006 3:21 pm - Cool 5*, but its not a coil gun or a gauss cannon. |

 | Jan 27, 2007 9:33 am - If I had some magnets I’d try to make a magnetic spud gun :P |
