A Simple Computer Prank
Introduction: Welcome, to a fairly simple computer prank. This is a simple, beginner prank I thought up today. If you are anything like me, then you really don’t have the time and knowledge to pull a great computer prank off. This prank is mainly for beginners, so I apologize to all you ’expert hackers’ out there. This one is supposed to be for fun, and is a completely harmless prank.
The idea: Well basically, the entire prank revolves around a background (or desktop wallpaper). You have to have Microsoft Paint to do this, and thats about it. Follow these step by step instructions, and you’ll be successful (theres absolutely no way to go wrong).
What to do: First, you have to locate your print screen button.
Once you’ve gotten that, go onto your desktop. Make sure you have no programs open, not even any tabs. Press that special ’print screen’ button. You now have a screen shot of your desktop.
Next open up Microsoft Paint.
In this program, the fun will begin!
Using the button shown below in the tool bar, drag out a square in the painting section.
Once you have done this, place your mouse over it, right click, and click paste. You should now have a picture of your desktop in Paint.
Remember, the screen shot should look exactly like the desktop would be without anything open!
Ok, so you have your editable desktop picture. Copy this picture below (or get it from http://j-walk.com/ss/excel/odd/odd18.htm) and paste it using the same method as above into the center of your desktop picture.

Save that picture now!
Now that we have the background we are going to use, lets set it! On your desktop, right click, properties, desktop, and then browse. Selct the picture you saved, and set it as the background.
It can get confusng now. behind each icon on the desktop, you have another one. One is the original. Delete that shortcut. Now, trying to click the ’background icon’, nothing will happen. it will appear as the screen is completely frozen.
By deleting the icon, only the shortcut is removed. programs are not uninstalled.
Next, just for fun, you can change the speed of the mouse. Go to start, control panel, printers and other hardware, mouse, and then go to pointers.
First change the pointer type- the picture below.
This is the unavailable pointer, and will give the effect that the mouse is not working.
Next change the pointer speed. Click pointer options, and move the pointer to as slow as it can go.
What this will do is make moving the pointer a very frustrating, and will piss them off!
Now the basis of the prank is set up. The only set back of the prank is the panel at the bottom of the screen. The only solution to this is to minimize it, by clicking it. You should see an arrow, and just move it down.
Finito!
Conclusion: Well, now you have your basic computer prank. it won’t take long for them to figure it out, but hey, it works for a little while. there are probably other methods or things you could do to this. try them out, and let me know how it went. Remember, this prank was for beginners, and people with limited computer mischief knowledge.

Sep 21, 2006 7:06 am - Love It :)- Im Giving it a 8 at least :) funny!!!!! i done it to many of my mates, most of emm fell for it (they Are no dumb) but they took about 3 or 4 minutes confused
an 03, 2007 11:52 am - nice easy prank, well explained. for a newer error message go to http://atom.smasher.org/e ror/ you can make up any kind you want and have loads of different icons. i use the loadinf pointer (eggtimer next to it) so it looks like really crashed.
