The Lion Country Safari Zoo in Irvine closed in 1984 due to many serious accidents involving animals. Since that year, the park has changed in a lot of ways. After closing, the property was bought by Wild Rivers, a water amusement park. However, behind the wet attractions, exists the parks entire drive-thru zoo. When it was open, lions, hippos, monkeys, ostrichs, giraffes and zebras roamed freely as you drove on by. Below is a timeline of some of the events that led to its demise.
In 1970- South African attorney Harry Shuster opens Lion Country Safari in the rolling hills of Irvine
1972- After siring 33 cubs, Frazier the lion at Lion Country Safari dies of exhaustion.
1979- A hippo named "Bubbles" escapes from Lion Country Safari and takes up residence in a rain-filled pond. For several days, authorities attempt to coax her out and end up tranquilizing her, only to watch in horror as she descends under the pond waters. Their efforts to pull the tranquilized 4,000-pound hippo out of the water are to no avail and Bubbles sadly drowns.
1983- An Asian elephant, Misty, broke free from her chains at Lion Country Safari in Irvine, California. Head game warden Lee Keaton, apparently was attempting to put a chain around the elephant’s leg when she turned on him, crushing his skull and killing him instantly. (Misty had attacked a handler, David Wilson, just three weeks earlier. The handler survived.) After Keaton was killed, Misty managed to run off the property, causing an evacuation of a nearby swap meet and a massive traffic jam on a nearby freeway. Misty was loose for three hours before being recaptured. At the time the elephant was owned by Gentle Jungle, a company that supplied animals for movies and television. Misty is now at Hawthorne Corporation giving rides to children.
1984- To the lament of many, Lion Country Safari closes when the owners sell off their "Lion Country" properties around the country.
More than two decades later, we decide that it needs to be explored. Located next to the 5 Freeway in Irvine and actually containing the Verizon Wireless Amplitheater sign which is in one of weasel’s eggs. We started off by exploring the wide open fields which were once exhibits and found just about nothing. We did come upon, were assuming, a chopshop out there and some kinda fine marble quarry. Look at the pics and decide. Then heading back toward the Wild Rivers park we found a couple interesting things. We first encountered an abandoned building which contained a bathroom and a large open room. Nothing spectacular. We then happened upon the matainence pool for the river ride. Amazingly there were still barges in the swampy water. We found about four barges but only two were still standing (thats what happens after 20 years) We then followed the river down stream until there was no more water and a guide track became visible. After following for some time we came upon a couple old waterfalls and the ride enterance. At the time of existance, it cost 75 cents for s and 50 cents for children. After more walking we came upon some fiberglass molds used to make the two halfs of some kinda boat im guessing. We also found an abandoned pump room built underground which was pretty interesting. There is also a go-cart track which was built sometime out next to one of the exhibits.

teh barges r cool, but the elephant tha killed a guy gives children rides??/ weird. It’s a sad history of a zoo. I’ll never think of one the same way again... 5*s cause not much makes me san, but this sorta does. |
