Ok well lately I have been fussing with cutting open bottle rocket engines, and grind the engines up. Then I would have to find the perfect container for them (crater makers). The little amount of powder I got, and the little amount of power I got was not cutting it. So I heard of a Flash powder and it decided “What the hell, why not.” In the following I will tell you about flash powder, its advantages over black powder, cons over flash powder, best mixtures, ext. Not only that but I while add a few powders that you may never have heard of. But here you go.
Flash Powders
Flash powder is a mix of an oxidizer and a metallic fuel. Flash powder is also a very, very unstable compound. Flash powder is sensitive to impact, static, heat and friction sensitive. The smallest little spark could kill you. But its unstableness leads to its great potential explosive energy!
Mixtures
Aluminum Powder, Potassium Chlorate: The ratio is (2:1). This flash powder is very unstable but also very cheap. The flash powder is probably the most common of flash powders among non-experienced pyros.
Aluminum Powder, Potassium Perchlorate: The ratio is (2:1). Much like Potassium Chlorate this is a very cheap Flash Powder compound. Again it is very unstable but not so much as Potassium Perchlorate. This is the first flash powder I experimented with
Aluminum Powder, Magnesium Powder or MagNALium: The ratio is (1:1). This is defiantly the most basic. I very cheap fuel (Aluminum powder), and an easy to find oxidizer (Magnesium powder). This mixture is up there with the most stable but don’t make too much it is still flash powder and EXTREMLY dangerous.
Barium Nitrate, Aluminum Powder, and Sulfur: The ratio is (7:2:1). Sulfur like in all Flash Powder mixtures is what makes flash powder that much more sensitive. I really didn’t feel comfortable making this.
Strontium Nitrate, Magnesium Powder: The ratio is (1:1). This flash powder will give u a brilliant bright red flash. The burning strontium nitrate mixed with magnesium a powerful oxidizer gives this to you.
Potassium Perchlorate, Magnesium powder, Antimony trisulphide, Sulphur: The ratio is (2.5:1:0.5:0.03). This mixture is the absolute best of my mixtures for it explosive potential as well as most stable. This mixture can also do without the Sulphur but it does enhance your flash. And I under stand that most of you have no idea where to get Antimony trisulphide but if you can you surly should.
Sodium Chlorate, Sulfur, Aluminum powder: The ratio is (2:1:1). This flash powder is better if you like the big bang more so then the flash. It’s also very liquid absorbent so keep it away from water. And this like all of these don’t make a lot at once.
Mixing
Because flash powder is such a volatile compound, that will combust with heat, static, or even friction there is a very proper way to mix flash powder it is called a “diaper method.” What you do is get a cloth and put your chemicals e.g. Aluminum and Magnesium put them into to the cloth and tie it loosely. Then tie a rope around your knot and hang it on something and swing it like a pendulum. Vola! Mixed flash powder.
I don’t recommend stirring it in a cup but if you lack cloth and rope then I’m sure you could stir it. If you do where latex gloves (no static), glass bowl (no static), and use a wooden grinder type thing. But if at all possible use the diaper method. And don’t make big amounts of it either. For your safety, make very little amounts or don’t make it at all. Flash powder causes the most deaths to pyros a year! So be careful.
I honestly say u shouldn’t make this stuff this is very dangerous stuff here is a video of it in its finest. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8354767314443713999&q=flash+powder&pl=true
Jun 22, 2006 6:13 pm - WOW, sweet egg, Im gonna need to get my hands on some of this stuff. I have a few questions, was the amount of flash powder you made in that video a safe amount to make all at once? And what mixture was it. thnx. 5***** BTW!
Aug 26, 2006 2:35 am - Youve got my first favourite and my fave bomb is flash powder so thanks for the more recipies. Smashing video 5* Pity about the title
