crossing two red wires together worked in like 1963, when you could also open the hood of the car and use a screwdriver to short the starter wire to the positive battery terminal to get the car to start. here is how you really hotwire a car:
first thing that you need to do is disable the steering lock. unless you are the terminator, jerking the wheel from side to side will not break it. you need a slide hammer. you insert a screw into the ignition, attach the slide hammer, and jerk the entire ignition lock cylinder out. then in the hole you will see a little bar, that when pushed to the right, will disable the steering lock. at this point, most cars (especially older ones) can be started with a screwdriver or anything that fits good by inserting it into where the ignition lock cylinder used to be and turning it.
problem is, that it is pretty easy to screw up the ignition when jerking the ingintion lock cylinder out, if this happens, remove the trim panels around the steering column, and get at the wiring harness that goes to the back of the ignition lock. yank it out or cut it, it doesn’t really matter as long as you can get it out far enough to work on. at this point a handy piece of equipment is a generic replacement ignition lock, which can be had for about $8 at any car parts store, or you can be ghetto and just get some wire to hook things up, kinda depends if you are hotwiring your own car or not. once you have the wires you will need to figure out what is what. the most important wire to find is the 12v+, you will be hooking everything up to this. there will be about 7 wires total, you should have a 12v+, an accesory wire, 2 start wires, two ignition wires, and an ecu wire. the ignition and the ecu wire will have to stay hooked up to the positive for the car to run, the accessory wire doesn’t matter, and the starter wires just need to be touched to the positive until the car starts.
it is suprisingly easy to do, i have only done it once, and it only took me about an hour two figure out with no previous experience or instructions. i was doing it to a rusted out 86 chevy nova that was given to me by a friend, that had no keys. once i got it hotwired, i bought and installed the generic ignition cylinder that i talked about earlier. |

 | Jul 07, 2006 10:25 am - If the car is as old in 1963, it takes almost no effort to break into it, but I’ve never stole a car that the keys weren’t in. |

 | Oct 17, 2006 1:15 pm - i worked at a wrecking yard with the russians this isnt easy with todays cars. i just tore apart a stolen 93 civic and it wasnt stolen for long due to anti-theft. getting started: you will need a nice pair of wire cutters, a broad flat head screw driver, a hook of some kind (must be strong)a slim jim, phillips screw driver, and a cresent wrench. get under the hood by pulling the external pop cable (with hook) disconnect the battery termanial clamps (with cresent wrench) touch the terminal clamps together (pos+ and neg- wires) to get rid of any power left in the system (there may be a capasitor) then break into the car there are many ways to do this (slim jim), first! check for a spare key. (overlooked by most people) once in the car unscrew the top kick panel (under the steering wheel) and look for a box. they usally dont say anything but if its on the right side under the steering wheel. its a alarm system. disconnect it. and as said in this egg you can rip out the tumbler unit buy inserting a screw into it and pulling it out. i dont know about you but im resourceful and make my own tools. (440 stainless steel rod 1 inch diameter with steel sleeve (a pipe cut to hand size to fit over the rod, a cap or somthin to weld to the rod to keep the sleeve on (and a ring around the bottom by the drill bit to keep the sleeve on) and a nice wood drill bit that is welded on the the other side or the rod, after made all you gotta do it put the tip of the drill bit on the key hole and turn the rod, after its screwed into tumbler unit (or key hole) grab the sleeve and jerk it away from the key hole making it hit the cap and jerking the tumbler unit out) reconnect the battery and use a broad screw driver to turn the ignition unit. (i just cut the wires but u gotta be good to get it goin) NOTE!!! use gloves and clothing you can burn afterwords... |
