This is a mixture that when ignited produces a fairly bright white light (not as bright as Magnesium, but you get the idea), burns hot enough to weld together Aluminum, and is relatively easy to make.
All you need is:
Potassium Nitrate (if you don’t have this, get up right now and go get some. come on man!)
Sulfur (You can find this in any Home Depot or Lowe’s as gardening sulfur which is 90% pure, good enough for this egg)
Sugar (I’m not even gonna say anything about where to find sugar...)
The mixture by mass is exactly 72.3% Potassium Nitrate, 19.8% Sulfur, 7.8% Sugar. Obviously you can round these percentages a little bit, and if you are using the gardening sulfur you will need to use a little more of it because it is impure. Now this is actually just two different formulas put together, a potassium nitrate/sulfur formula and the classic potassium nitrate/sugar smoke bomb formula. 70% KNO3/S mix and 30% KNO3/Sugar mix
The first formula, which can be made separately, is 71.6% KNO3 and 28.4% Sulfur. This usually produces a pretty big flash and bang, but is a little tough to light at first. This makes using most fuses a little risky, and obviously you don’t want to be next to it holding a lighter to it trying to get it to go off. So to make the mixture easier to light, I’ve added a small amount of the “smoke bomb” formula into it (the smoke bomb can be found pretty much anywhere on this site).
If everything went absolutely perfect (which probably won’t happen), this is what would occur:
4 KNO3 + 5 S ---> 2 K2O + 2 N2 + 5 SO2 (this is the “difficult” mixture without the smoke bomb part)
Sorry about the lack of pictures, but it’s because I don’t have a camera (working) at the moment, and I’m pretty sure nobodies ever made this before so there’s really no pictures for me to steal either (just kidding). Oh and by the way this is my first egg, but don’t vote this down/up just because of that.

Aug 03, 2006 11:24 am - YA I live in canada so Potassium Nitrate also know as salt peter is hard to get and the store in my city that sold it was clean out from when my friend made smoke bombs and that stock was from the 50s and they dont restock it any more but = (

Aug 03, 2006 2:36 pm - Well I think I’d rather use a powder that U can use however I want instead of lighting off a pressurized bottle of gas. But that’s just me.
Oh and Salamanderhead, i know sugar can be a little hard to come by these days, but if you go to unitednuclear.com maybe you can find some there. Good luck
