How old is the Kunai? Was it ever a historical weapon? Did it ever exist outside of animé?
No idea.
But I liked the concept, so as a milling experiment I made one. My kunai is shaped from a quarter inch thick block of some 1010 low carbon steel I had lying around. I did most of the shaping with an angle grinder (I am the angle grinder king), and punched out the hole in the handle ring with a series of drillbit holes and some Dremel coercion.
Since it’s made from such low carbon steel this piece has pretty dismal durability and edge holding properties. Actually, only about an inch of the tipward part of the edge is sharp at all. I did heat treat it, but the low carbon content steel barely hardened and the difference in toughness is negligible.
I made a little gravity belt sheath for the knife, and later blued it to keep it from rusting up all the time. It’s not good for anything more than a letter opener, but it still looks damn cool.
Divining the function and technique behind such a weapon leads to some interesting ideas. In keeping with the ninja tradition, every piece of equipment has multiple uses. The most obvious one is that of a weapon, either hand-to-hand or as a throwing knife. The wedge shaped profile could make the kunai good for breaking locks. I find that the ring on the handle does not aid in one’s grip of the knife or allow any particularly useful wielding techniques (appearances in Naruto aside), but perhaps one could tie a rope through the hole and use the kunai as a grapping hook, spearhead, or a returnable throwing weapon.
well thats my egg that i made heres some more pics of kunai that i did not make and that you can buy over the web
Aug 07, 2006 8:22 pm - the kunai was a japanese spade, you know those shovels used by gardeners, carried by "ninjas", so ninja’s used them because if they got caught with them, they could jsut say that they’re gardeners instead of "Oh yeah... i’m a fricken ninja" so there’s yoru history, maybe have been a historical weapon, and yes they did exist outside of anime.

JP: Hi
SwordmasterZero: Erm. Hello.
JP: I just read your Milled Kunai article
SwordmasterZero: Alright.
JP: you didn’t post it on any sites other than your own did you?
SwordmasterZero: No.
SwordmasterZero: I’ve linked to it once or twice. Why?
JP: Some kid on RottenEggs said he wrote it and I called him on it.
SwordmasterZero: Do I need an account at this place to complain at him?
JP: just making sure I got my facts right
SwordmasterZero: Erhm. He posted what, exactly? I didn’t even write directions...
JP: He posted exactly what you wrote and your pictures
SwordmasterZero: So I see.

Aug 18, 2006 11:58 pm - Actually it was used more as a "utility knife" exept they usually never used them in combat. They used them as an entrenchment tool, As well as a makeshift "Step" by jamming it into a crevice in a wall or something, That way it gives them a little "Boost". Anyway i’m not gonna list all the uses because the list just goes on and on. Usually the only sharpened part was the point, So the user could grip the blade without injuring his hand.
