i know that there have been other crossbow eggs but i couldnt see any that were the same as mine but if they were then i apologise.
materials:
chunk of wood (i made mine 45 by 4.5cm)
solid metal pipe (mine was 7.5mm by 24cm)
3 average length wood saws (these are made out of spring metal)
eyelets (these are hollow rivets)
nail and screws
tin strip 3cm wide
spring (the one i used came from the school solder holder)
nylon string
method:
1. first thing to do is to cut your piece of wood into the desired shape (see first pic)
2. the next step is to find the spot where you want your trigger to stick out and mark there. then you have to drill a hole approx 2.5cm down from that point at a 45 degree angle (it doesnt have to be perfect), this can be done with an electric drill or a school drill press.
3. to attach the metal tube that will be the trigger first you must stick it through the hole you have just drilled (it will fit very loosley) so that it sticks around 2cm out of the top of the hole. drill a hole through the middle of the hole and through the metal tube and stick a nail through both of them. if done correctly the metal pipe should rotate back and forth on the nail. next bend the handle part of the trigger so that it runs almost parallel to the wood.
after the first 3 steps it should look something like this:
4. now u can remove the trigger so that another hole can be drilled the size of thespring almost all the way straight through the handle. then sit the spring in the hole so there is a fair bit poking out and then replace the trigger so that it is compressing the spring. when the trigger is squeezed then the part poking out the top of the crossbow should move down into the hole.
it should look like so:
that was the hardest part
5. now to make the prod (bow). first thing to do is to get your 3 wood saws and mark out the larges posible strip you can get out of them (make sure they are all the same size) and cut them out with an angle grinder
6. bend the piece of tin into a u-bolt so that the metal strips of saws fit onto the inside and use a spot welder to attach them to it. the u-bolt should look like so:
drill a hole through the u bolt on either end and into the the wood of the crossbow and screw them toghether. drill two holes, one on either side of the bow for the spring to go through.
7. angle grind the part of the trigger that the string attaches to so that it is vertical and the string could not slip off.
8. put the eyelets through the holes on the bow and tie a knot in the nylon string so that it cannot slip out and bend the bow (may require help) before doing the otherside.
the finished product should look like so:
for my arrows i bought some heads and fletches and dowel and made my own
the one i made (the one in the pics) is very small but my best shot so far has been over 80 meters.
please rate and comment, i will answer questions.
Sep 13, 2006 10:17 pm - *5, good pictures, and instrutions, but you don’t need to be shoting anything living, you can find something else to shot, to show them the power, thanks.
Sep 13, 2006 11:20 pm - thanks for the good ratings guys, ill try and get a vid at the archery range or some where like that (dont worry lady i wont shoot anything living).
Se 14, 2006 3:50 pm - oh and i almost forgot, "theflyingninja" the wood saws are actualy made out of spring steel which is what they used for actual crossbows, not tin.
Sep 15, 2006 11:21 pm - ^^OMG I CAN TYPE IN CAPS LOCK! HOLY FUCK EVERYONE! LOOK AT ME CAN BE THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION.
now i’ve got that out of my system, yopr instructins are a bit convoluted (step 3,4,6)
Quote:
drill a hole through the middle of the hole
clarify on how to build the trigger, and you say 3 saws to make the prod, but you don’t say how to make it, i assume the three are made into a laminate, but how? the bit with the u bolt is a bit messy too, how does the Xbow fire without hitting the u bolt or prod?
Sep 16, 2006 4:39 pm - sorry about any inconvineence caused.
in step 1 where i say "drill a hole approx 2.5cm down from that point at a 45 degree angle" what i actually should have said is "drill a hole approx 2.5cm in diamiter all the way down from that point at a 45 degree angle"
in step 3 where i say to "drill a hole through the middle of the hole and through the metal tube" i am meaning for you to drill a nail sized hole in the side of you crossbow and all the way through including the meatal tube so that it can pivot on the nail.
whit the 3 saws they are not laminated because this ruins there flex but unstean just spot welded to the inside of the ubolt as can be seen in the pics. the ubolt is inset slightly to stop the arrow hitting.
sorry about mistakes and if there are any others then just ask.
Sep 19, 2006 2:55 am - nylon string is found in any sailing shops but any strong string will do and i am working on a mecanism to hold the arrow in place but at the monment the string hits the back of the arrow
Nov 03, 2006 1:55 am - rad!!! ive made crossbows before, but my prod was allways bamboo, and that deteriorates and looses power, but for a real crossbow trigger go to http://198.144.2.125/Cros bows/crossbows.htm its awsome!!!!
Jan 21, 2007 6:04 pm - do you have any idea of its poundage? because i went to an archery shop and the ones they had were from 150 pounds to 200 pounds. and the fps was only at about 280 to 320 fps. they had them chronograghed. or however its spelt
Mar 05, 2007 4:15 pm - cool awesome this is the first real practical egg but can you use anything different than a leaf spring i dont have a salvagable car around .but cool 5*’s
