You might have seen my other egg on “homemade sky rockets”. These are simple to build rockets that involve a CO2 canister. However I understand that not everyone can find these useful devices so I have experimented with making sky rockets out of cardboard tubes with matchhead powder. I got one to work, and I made a video of it. And you can find that video right here
http://www.rotteneggs.com/r3/show/se/160924.html?al=filelocker
(Look at the top file)

Unfortunately with these rockets, you need a lot of different stuff. But once you get them it will be a lot faster to make then to make the CO2 canisters ones

Things you need:

1. some redheads handy pack matches, these come in a box of about 100 and contain a little more powder then regular matches
2. some clay
3. Some cardboard tubes. The place where I get mine is from either the chemist or at a newsagency. They sell rolls of fax paper for about 6 dollars for two long rolls. (you have to waste all the fax paper though)
4. an oven
5. newspaper
6. epoxy or super glue
7. skewers (supermarket)
8. sparklers
9. icing sugar

How to make them

Sorry if you don’t understand these steps as they were the best I could do
.

1. roll a ball of clay about 1 by 1 cm in diameter

2. Squeeze it through the cardboard tube and push it down with something to make a good even plug. Then push the skewer through the middle of the clay plug.

3. Turn the oven on to about 200 degrees Celsius and stick the rocket engine in there for about half an hour. In this period of time, you can make the powder

4. use a knife and scrape the flakes off from the hole packet of 100 matches

5. Lightly tap the flakes with a hammer until the flakes turns into powder and then put about ¼ of a tea spoon of icing sugar with the powder and mix it together

6. Get the rocket engine out of the oven. Use a pencil to push out the nozzle plug and apply some strong glue all around it and push it back in the tube. Wait 20 mins for it to dry

7. Stuff in all the powder into the cardboard tube and push it down real hard with a pencil head. (Not the point)

8. Stuff in some matchhead powder into the nozzle to help sparkler ignite the main fuel

9. Scrunch up a small amount of newspaper and put glue over it. Then stuff it into the top of the rocket and let it drie. Also put glue on the skewer on the cardboard tube and glue it in place

10. Use the scissors to cut off a piece of the sparkler. It needs to be the part that gets thinner that goes into the nozzle

11. Now simply stick the sparkler fuse through the nozzle and it should stick in place

Launching the rocket
The cool thing about cardboard rockets is that you can launch it in your backyard. Its suitable for birthday parties and if you had a few friends come over.

Launching

1. Stick the rocket in the ground and have it pointing on an angle where it will land on your own roof and not others.
2. light the fuse and stand back a few meters
3. wait until the sparkler fuse ignites the main fuel and it will shoot up into the air about 15 to 40 meters

message me if you have any problems as there are a number of things that can go wrong with these

Missing a few things, but see my new egg for making your own cardboard tubes. It’s MUCH cheaper than fax tubes. Modeling clay is not the kind of clay suitable for rocket nozzles, rammed bentonite or cheap ass kitty litter would work better. If not available, by some plaster of paris or water putty. http://cgi.ebay.com/1-lb- yoming-Bentonite-Clay-ONLY 99-CENTS_W0QQitemZ25004139 131QQihZ015QQcategoryZ2567 QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcm ZViewItem Theres some bentonite clay for 7.15$ with shipping.

5*s f-cking brilliant
any of you who don’t have clay, i have found an alternitive. just mix dirt and PVA glue in a 3:2 ratio and keep mixing till you have squishy sticky stuff, this stuff is totally unflammable and dries rock solid.

No offense, but I think its easier to get and make tyhe Co2 canister rockets than buying a rocket engine. 5* for the effort and pics.

i would simply make it longer. but a better type of fuel to make, mix potassium permanganate with powdered sugar. mess around with the amounts till you have a nice burning flame, but this stuff burns a tad slower which will make a perfect take off. and will not push the plug out like what happened in one of my vids. also adds a nice colour to the flames
