picric acid is a really cool substance and quite easy to make it is really powerful and it has many uses. it is made from easily found substances that can be easily obtained from around town
oven hotplate, any heat sorce will do preferable make this outside
PROCEDURE: (these are not my pics these are from a friend so im giving him credit for the de5cription and pics)
I used red coloured drain cleaner, recrystallized acetylsalicyclic acid and potassium nitrate in prill form.
First, I put 220ml of drain cleaner in a 700ml jar, and began heating the water bath. As it was heating up, I added 40 grams of ASA (acetylsalicyclic acid or aspirin) and stirred it. It all dissolved once the water bath reached boiling temperature, and during this time the solution turned from red to deep black. After the ASA finished dissolving, I continued heating in the boiling water bath for 25 minutes, with ocassional stirring
I took it out of the boiling water, then proceeded to add potassium nitrate very slowly, at a rate just slow enough to prevent orange fumes from forming. The mixture foamed during this step.
The rate of foaming varied, being strongest near the middle of the addition process then slowing down again near the end. The colour lightened until it had formed a clear red solution. The addition took a total of 40 minutes to complete.

This was allowed to sit for about 15 minutes, after which a layer of yellow picric acid had formed on top. I then stuck it in boiling water for another 6 minutes, and a bit more picric acid was formed.

I let it cool a bit, then helped it along with some cold water since it was getting late. I then poured the room temperature or therabouts solution in 1 liter of cold water, and then more water was used to rinse out the remaining picric acid out of the nitration jar.

filter the yellow cystals on the top of the jar and allow them to dry then light them
please store this in like u tupperware container just incase of a accidental ignition all that would happen woulld the top would fly off
WARNING:
never ever ever store this in a glass jar with a screw on lid if you do the picric acid will recrystalize in the threads of the jar and when open it there will be a accidental ignition caused by the friction on the lid twisting on the jar
Oct 31, 2006 12:51 pm - some of the uses for this stuff is like igniters for other less sensitive explosives um lemme think u could use it as a blasting cap just wrap it in a little bit of tin foil and use it like a blasting cap u could use it as a main charge just be very careful and thats about it im sure if u used your imagination u could come up with some good ideas

Nov 06, 2006 6:54 pm - Nice egg, but this stuff is really dangerous. It has a NPFA flammability rating of 4, which means any can kind of friction can make this stuff react and explode. Be careful, you crazy bastard.
