This is a simple guide to help you get started in drumming, have fun, and please vote. I have been playing drums for about 2-3 years now, so I know what I am doing. If you want to learn guitar, have a look at my guitar playing egg.
1.Getting a Drumset
2.Parts of the drumset
3.How to Read Drum Tabs
4.Tuning
5.Flams, Rides, Notes, Triples.
6.Beginning Lesson
1. So step one, and probably the hardest set of them all, getting one of these expensive drumsets. They’re not easy to find. But you can locate them on the web, Buy N Sell, or at your local music store. Drumsets range from about $800-$1400, depending on the overall
quality of the drumset, mine was $850.00
2. Step 2, parts of the drumset.
Drums
-The small drum on the far right, and probably thr most important, is the snare drum
-The drum to the left, next to the snare, is one of the Tom-Toms, this particular one is important for fills, and solos.
-The drum next to it is another Tom-Tom, almost the same as the first Tom-Tom, but slightly bigger.
-The large drum to the far left of this picture, is the Floor Tom.
-The very large drum in the middle is the Base Drum, which is hit with a foot pedal, the Base Drum supports the two Tom-Toms
Cymbals
-The cymbal on the far right is a Ride Cymbal, it is used for gentle beats, not for hitting hard.
-The cymbal suspended near the snare drum on the center right on the picture, is a crash cymbal. THIS is the cymbal you hit hard to make an exciting sound.
-On the far right there are 2 cymbals together, which can be lifted by a pedal, this is the Hi-Hat, and is a very important part of the set. It is used in almost every rock song you will hear.
Of course, not all drumsets look like the one I have posted here, this is just what most kits look like.
3. Step 3, how to read tabs look at the tab below
C---l---------------------X
HH-l-x-x-x-x------------
t-----l---------------------
T----l---------------------
S----l-----o----o-oooo--
F----l---------------------
Bd--l-o-----------------
Hf---l------------------
Ok, the letters on the side represent a drum or cymbal
C - Crash Cymbal
HH - Hi-Hat
t - Small Tom-Tom (Notice lower-case ’t’)
T - Larger Tom-Tom
S - Snare Drum
F - Floor Tom
Bd - Base Drum
Hf - Hi-Hat (Using Foot)
The x and X represent striking cymbals, the capitalization represents how hard to hit.
The o means hitting a drum, if it was capitalized like O it would mean hit it hard.
4. Tuning, tuning drums is hard, and will require a tuning key, like this
I would suggest bringing them into a shop, but if you feel confident, put the key around the screws holding the rim in place, they will go low when loose, and high when tight.
5. A flam on a drum tab will be represented by a F, it means to hit one stick a split second before u hit the other on the drum, so it sound like Fl-am,
A ride is obviously done on a ride cymbal, and is also known as a roll. Keep hitting the cymbal lightly and gradually get louder, ths is usually done at the end of songs.
Triples are done in different ways, they can be a round house, or can be on one drum. Triplets are represented like 3 notes tied together.
6. Ok, now thats you’ve learned the basics, heres your first lesson
HH--l--x--x--x--x
S---l----------o---
Bd--l--o-----------
This is known as a basic rock beat, it’s not something you should play first though, if this is too hard to start, try hitting the Hi-Hat in quarter notes like this.
HH--l--x--x--x--x----
S---l------o-----o---
Bd--l--o-----o-----
And that’s all for Basic Drumming, I hope you learned something, If you want to learn guitar, check out my guitar playing egg. Thank you for looking and please vote! |

 | Nov 15, 2006 8:15 pm - i can tell u like ur crash because thats wat really defines a zepplin beat that and threes any way good egg drumming is’nt that simple though u need to be able to do more than one thing at once i have taghut alot of people the basic rock beat and i find it is easiest to play on just the snare for beginners like this rim rim rim rim and snare i also find that people will start getting beats and once they’ve basically got it they start playing really badly agian so for you begginers dont get discouraged and practice alot any way 5*s |

 | Nov 15, 2006 8:30 pm - Drum tabs have always confused me.
I’ll give you five stars. |

 | Nov 16, 2006 1:29 am - 5*, that was great for begginers. if i had read that wen i was startin out id have progressed a bit quicker |

 | Nov 16, 2006 1:50 am - Yeah... I’m gonna give this a 1. Because this is exactly the sort of breifly explained bullcrap that leads to total idiots spamming intelligent discussion, and lots of crappy players. "o ya, i cn play drums prty gud". They have absolutely no technique, which brings a bad tone out of the drums. Seriously, the only way you can briefly describe beginning drums; Get a good teacher. Don’t go over this badly and sloppily. But still, that would’ve been a bitch to type, so I’ll give 1*. |

 | Nov 16, 2006 8:58 am - wow great stuff dude....5* |

 | Nov 16, 2006 9:35 am - Always cool to encourage others to jam on drums or guitars....5*s |

 | Nov 16, 2006 2:11 pm - hmm 2* hard for a complete beginner to get and not to good de5criptions about anything..kinda missleading in some ways |

 | Nov 16, 2006 2:24 pm - Cool. I can read piano notes probably just as fluently as english. But drum tabs have always given me a hard time.
