Automotive Oil Change
This one little effort on your behalf will save TONS of trouble in the long run. This is the single most important step to maintaining your vehicle.
When Should I do it?
Every 3,000 miles, or 3 months, whichever occurs first
I bought Synthetic 6,000+ mile oil!
Change it at 3,000 miles. Sure, this oil has better DETERGENT elements, but the suspended particles are what scores the cylinder walls, and wears on the bearing surfaces on your crank and cam shafts.
I’d rather take it to a shop GREAT! You can pay more, while I pay less, and I get material to make an egg on...
To the point
First You should drive around to get the oil hot (so it flows better) and to get the particles in the oil. Then, pop the hood.
This should be located under your steering wheel, or next to your drivers seat (in between the door jam and seat bracket)
Now Make sure you have the proper viscosity oil and the proper oil filter. You can usually find these figures in your owners manual, or at the auto parts store.
Get the properly fitted tools Mine takes a 13MM wrench, yours may be different. Also get an oil pan, filter wrench (if you are a wuss chicken) and a section of carpet to lay on.
Remove The oil filler cap, this will allow the oil to flow out faster
Remove The drain plug. Make sure you are on the OIL pan, not the TRANSMISSION pan. If the fluid comes out red, you fucked up.
While The oil is draining, check over the engine. Such things as washer fluid and air filters are also vital to a well maintained vehicle.
As you can see, my truck was THIRSTY!
Check the pleated underside of the air filter element too. If it is dirty, replace it. NEVER use compressed air to clean it. If somebody told you this was ok, screw them, your engine will be better maintained. Mine looks dark here, but is about three weeks old.
Now Your oil should be done draining. If it is, replace the plug. REPLACE THE PLUG. Trust me, you DON’T want to forget this...
Remove The oil filter. Make sure you have the oil pan lined up with the oil guide.
Check For the black gasket. If it is still there REMOVE IT. If you don’t you will have a hella mess to clean up. Also check the gasket surface for nicks and scratches and the threads for damage.
Replace The oil filter with a new one. EVERY TIME.
Refill The crankcase with the proper oil (amount and viscosity)
Replace The oil cap. You are about to start the engine. Failure to replace the cap = big mess on your engine (usually).
Start the engine Watch the oil pressure gauge and count off the seconds. If it takes more than 10 seconds for the gauge to go into operating range, or the oil light to go off, you may want to look into a new oil pump.
Now Turn the engine off. Remove the dipstick and wipe it off.
Reinsert The dipstick, and remove. Make sure to check the operating level and ensure it is in the operating range. This area is USUALLY crosshatched
Too Low!
Super!
Reinsert That bad boy into your engine.
Record Your mileage. This is very important so that you can follow the correct changing intervals.
Nov 22, 2006 10:50 am - also dont forget to rub some of the old oil on the rubber gasket of the new oil filter or it will be hard as hell to get off next time.
