This is how to distill alcohol to turn it from relatively weak drink made by fermentation to very very strong (near enough 100%) drink. If you live in Ireland you might have seen a similar thing on an RTE programme called the poitin maker, which is where i got the idea. That however, used a proper distillery. My way is based on that but much simpler.
What you need:
A large metal or glass bottle shaped container (big giant glass bottle would be perfect. If you cant get 1, use several smaller glass bottles such as wine bottles)
Copper piping (use blow torch to bend it)
Bucket of with slits cut in it for pipe insertion(hee hee, i said insertion)
Container to catch your produce
Fire
Leak fixer (bought from DIY shops)
Alcoholic mix you want to distill (check some of my other eggs)
What you do:
As in the picture, fill your large glass bottle with your alcoholic mix. Now insert your pipe into the top and seal the gaps around the edge with leak fixer. If you cant get any, use something else thats waterproof. Now run your piping through a bucket of ice. Thats essentially it. All thats left to do is place the container in the fire and catch the stuff that drips out the pipe. IMPORTANT: Every few minutes, take a small glass and catch some of the produce in it. Now throw the contents of the glass into the fire. If it flares up and catches fire, you have strong alcohol. Once it stops catching fire, take your bucket of produce away. You have now got a very strong mix, but you can redistill it to make it completely pure. Distilling more than twice is a waste of time.

 | Nov 30, 2006 1:41 pm - *4 pretty darn good, thanks. |

 | Nov 30, 2006 1:42 pm - This has the advantage over most distillation eggs because they all say ’heat to exactly 78 degrees’ (which is a difficult temperature to reach and maintain). My way is way better because you dont have to worry about temperature. Alcohol has a lower boiling point, so it comes off first. |

 | Nov 30, 2006 2:33 pm - don’t use glass because it will shatter and make a mess because the heat on the inside is not the same as the outside, just like throwing a ice cold balloon at a car window when its like 100 degrees. |

 | Nov 30, 2006 5:20 pm - Doesnt distilling Alcohol Make Acetic Acid?? |

 | Nov 30, 2006 6:26 pm - instead of alcohol, try smashing up wood chips and mixing them with a little water, then heating them up. When it condenses it forms wood alcohol, or methyl alcohol i believe |

 | Nov 30, 2006 9:41 pm - ^ don’t do what he said
Quote: Wood alcohol, also called methyl alcohol or methanol, is an extremely poisonous chemical found in paint remover |

i seriously wouldnt advise it as the pure alcohol will burn your mouth off. better to mix it. but, if u want to drink it straight i wont stop u.... |

 | Dec 02, 2006 9:20 am - 5 and favs dude me and my friends have been waiting to make moonshine for a ling time in my basement i love u! |

 | Dec 02, 2006 12:10 pm - so what makes the best mix? |

 | Dec 03, 2006 8:40 am - Well if you distill 1 litre of something that is already strong (say whiskey), youll get more pure alcohol than if you distill 1 litre of something weak (eg. wine). So the best mix is the strongest, i suppose. |

 | Mar 21, 2007 8:37 pm - so is this drinkable alcohol, or is it kill you alcohol? |

 | May 13, 2007 7:54 am - well its 100%, so yeah its kill you. mix it with other things. to mix a really strong but non-killing drink, pour it into water until the bubbles stay on the surface for more than a few seconds, without disappearing. | |
