This is a little out there, but I figured this would make a good egg for those that don’t know already. It’s a way to watch television online for free. (You’ll need broadband internet as it uses roughly 131 kbps.)
For it, you’ll need Winamp which, if you don’t already have, you can download here http://www.winamp.com/player/. It’s free. However, if you don’t want it to take control of your audio stuff, you’ll have to do a custom install and uncheck a bunch of stuff. No biggie.
Now that you have Winamp, click in the little button on the upper left corner. A menu will appear. From here, scroll down to Media Library. (or you can use the shortcut key of ALT+L) For first time users, you should get a prompt about ratings. Just go ahead and select all of ’em.
Now with that out of the way, head down to the "Online Media" tab and choose "SHOUTcast TV" from the list. Near the upper right corner should be written "Genre:" with a little pulldown tab. You wanna go down and select ESS. Once there, click on the show you wanna watch.
It may take a few times, as there are only so many people allowed in each room. Some of the shows (Simpsons, Aqua Teen, MST3K) are very hard to get into. You’re main Winamp window will buffer when you’re finally in and voila, you’ve got free TV.
Now, there’s a lot of expressions about free stuff and this falls into it for the most part. You see, this service is run by ess.tv (http://www.ess.tv) They host these shows and cover the bandwidth for all users, however, they do have a paid membership service. I haven’t checked into this too much, as I’ll take what I can get for free. However, if a room is full and a member enters, it will kick out a freeloader. Sometimes, they turn around and leave and you can double click on the show again and get right back in. Other times, you’re SOL.
If "Server Full" annoys you, you can check out Winamp Video to watch some music videos. AOL also has videos, movie trailers, clips from shows, news and other stuff. Oh, and there’s radio stations available too under "Winamp Radio".
