Hey, DaDevil here with the latest info on avoiding these recent "Phone Unlocking Scams".

First of all, to refresh peoples minds.

Quote:
What is Unlocking?

This means enabling your phone to work with a compatable sim card from any mobile network. It is possible to simply unlock a mobile phone by putting in a code found via software.

Yes, Unlocking is legal to do, but there are many safer ways of doing it.

1) Go to your Phone Service Provider (Eg: Telstra, Optus, Vodaphone, etc); And have them digitally unlock your particular handset, but its not worth it, it aint cheap. Telstra charge about $50 just to unlock.

2) There are special programs, where they get information from the Internet and give you Unlocking Codes. This is very hard however, you need the phones special number, and the handset code, etc.

3) WHEN BUYING A PHONE, BUY IT "UNLOCKED". THIS SAVES ALL THE BULLSHIT HASSLES OF TRYING TO UNLOCK IT URSELF.

Anyway, now that thats outta the way, on with the egg.

On eBay there have been and still is, plagues of BUY IT NOW auctions on UNLOCKING YOUR PHONE. Now, some of them are for really REALLY expensive phones.

Its very dodgey, and a scam.

1) The seller has 0 Feedback

2) The auction seller is the same person, with the same layouts of auctions, but goes under different usernames.

3) Heres how their services work: (And I Quote):

Quote:
All you need to do is...

’Buy it Now’ at $25.00 for the unlock.
You will be notified of our Gold Coast, Queensland address to send your phone. On receipt of your phone/s your phone will be unlocked immediately and sent back to you same day. Payment must be received prior to returning your Mobile Phone handset. Your Mobile Phone handset will be sent back to you on completion via Australia Post Express Post and/or Registered Post, if requested.

What the fuck?? A person with 0 feedback for starters, wants you to send your phone far far away, with absolutely no guarrentee of getting it back?? Fuck NO!

Thats a Scam. In one particualar auction, for a nokia 8800, worth at like $1200. Now this scammer wants you to send, at your expense, a $1200 phone, just hand it over like that, with no guarrentee you’l ever see it again??

DONT DO THIS - SCAM!

I just thought I’d let everyone on RE know that. It seems pretty obvious, but still worth reading and being carefull...

AND BUY YOUR PHONES OUTRIGHT, OR BUY THEM LOCKED, KNOWING YOU WILL STAY WITH THAT SERVICE PROVIDER!

Yea I just googled a website for my old nokia phone. Most of them were ones that charge you, but if you find a free one and type in the model number it will tell you what to do. 4*
